I found this very beautiful drawf bamboo at a friend's home in Bombay. I removed a clump of it from his lawn (very shallow roots), cut off the growth above 2 feet, packaged it appropriately for airport security and brought it to Calcutta where I planted it in a very flood-prone part of my garden. Within 9 days it has developed new buds. Does anyone know what species it is ? The foliage is very dark green and the adult plants are seldom taller than 4 feet.

Without seeing the mother plant, it is tough to determine what you have....Based on your story, I would guess it is a Pleioblastus sp.,...any chance of a photo of a photo of mama?

John, I salute your powers of deduction - It is indeed a Pleioblastus, - Pleioblastus variegatus to be exact.

This is the same transplanted clump after three weeks (of which two were in perpetually waterlogged soil and cloudy skies). Some of the bamboo poles have produced nice new growth in a manner I thought was not possible, while two others are presumably dead. The variegation is distinct.

Kumar,

There are lots of variegated bamboos. It is difficult to determine for certain but this one looks like a Sinobambusa tootsik 'Albostriata'. It is a running bamobb, although not so aggressive.

Other people may disagree and I am not married to this ID.

Thanks, I remember searching on the internet for literature on Pleioblastus - your first suggestion - and that seemed to fit the description quite well.

I have seen the mother grove and it is decidedly not aggresive at all.
