Does anyone know how to propagate this plant? I've germinated seeds and they don't come true to type. I've tried stem cuttings and that doesn't work. Root cuttings are reportedly the way to go with new shoots rising off of the root cuttings you're able to break them off and root those out. But I noticed something odd while getting a piece of root from a Summer Chocolate plant yesterday. There were two, what appeared to be root suckers that were completely green. Wouldn't this only happen if the tree was grafted? In which case I just grabbed a green type rootstock and that'll be no help. I didn't see a graft union line so I don't know what's going on. Anyone have any tips on how to get this plant without paying over $100 for a small tree?

I'm not familiar with this one but the root shoot being green could also be caused by the chocolate color being an unstable variation that is reverting back to green. It could also be that all chocolates start as green and then turn chocolate color.

So many species,

so little time.

I have read about that 2nd part...starting green, and then needing sun to turn purple. I've also read that many of them are grafted.

Is this cultivar not supposed to be as weedy as the regular form? Does it have any increased disease resistance?

Matty, I can help a little,

Best and most stable way is Bud grafted, I don't know how to do that, but that is what the big growers up here do, and it works the best they say.

They still open green and the sun turns them dark. I have a small one and they are supposed to only grow to around 20' tall.

Hope that helps.

roger.

Bud graft huh? So I'll have to collect some seed, germinate it for rootstock and try and graft on a Summer chocolate bud. OK.

Lovely tree.... you can always germinate LOTS of seeds and hope that one will turn red?? I know it is a lot of work though...

Wow... $100 for a small tree... I got lucky as the nursery near me sold them for half that. Mine is now (4 years later) tall as the house and an amazing contrast to surrounding vegetation. LOVE this tree (will HATE it when it gets really big and messy I'm sure, though)

Does anyone know if this will be as weedy as the regular form in the southeast?

Matt,

I bought a small unknown species of tree that turns chocolate when the leaves mature.....new sprouts come from the bottom green......maybe this is typical?

The wife keeps it as a houseplant and will not allow me to move it outdoors.....that would make a better test.....

Geoff, how does that tree flower compared to the common form? (Here's a beautiful example of the common form flowering.)

Mine stated blooming last year at 4' tall, not very bright pink compared to 'rosea' or the very colorful 'fan silk'. I have a little chocolate one I't trying to make into a small planter tree.

Mine is not nearly as old as the tree in your photo and so far it has only flowered sort of sporadically... maybe 10 flowers total at a time... hard to even notice them... they have mostly white with a hint of pink... no way will it ever look spectacular like the tree in your photo
