John Smolowe's Garden Date: Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Time: 1-5 pm

Location: 560 Berkeley Ave. Menlo Park

The Smolowe & Werne garden is over 20 years old (Sunset zone 15), and is planted on a one acre lot. There are many palm species in the ground, among the genera are Archontophoenix, Brahea, Trachycarpus, and Trithrinax. Many others are still young, with Jubaea chilensis and Sabal palmetto just forming trunks, and the hybrid Butia x Syagrus at about 6 feet of trunk. Many other smaller palms are planted along with cycads, bananas, gingers, cacti and succulents, passionfruit, water lilies, several types of giant bamboo along with many orchids and and bromeliads hanging from the trees .

Our garden tour will be followed by a meeting then an auction of palms and companion plants. If you have any specimens to contribute to our fund raiser the Society would be grateful. A potluck luncheon is planned; contributions will be welcome.

Directions: 560 Berkeley Avenue in Menlo Park, between Coleman Avenue and Bay Roads.

From the North, take 101 to the Willow Road West/Menlo Park Exit. Take the first right onto Bay Road. Bear left in 100 yards to stay on Bay Road. In about 0.5 miles turn left on Berkeley Ave. 560 is 0.4 miles down on the left, just past Peninsula Way. There's a large Phoenix canariensis outside the gate.

From the South, same, except use the Willow Road West exit to cross over 101, then turn right on Bay Road.

From the East Bay, use the Dumbarton Bridge. The 2nd traffic light, about a mile after the bridge ends, is Willow Road. Turn left on Willow and drive about a mile until you reach 101. Cross over 101, the turn right on Bay

Solid zone 9, I can expect at least one night in the mid to low twenties every year.

Hot, dry summers. Cold, wet winters.

It's amazing, with as much time as I spend on Palm Talk, that I can miss threads like this one. Nice pics John.
