That is, as ever, my hairy mitt, the usual human hand size.

Looks like a variagated ginger.  I used to have a ton of those - the flowers are beautiful.

Wow Dave, I know I wasn't the first to reply, but that is undoubtedly the only plant in the kingdom that I knew the (common) name to that you didn't!   :P   I have also heard it referred to as drunken ginger.  I do love its flowers- mine did that about 1-2 months ago.
