This is my favourite tree, and the reason I went to visit LHI (what? there are palms there too?). They grow very well here in temperate NZ. In fact I consider this tree a NZ native, as NZ and LHI share a large number of species, and NZ has fossil record of extinct Ficus... ok, a bit of a stretch...

Warning to anyone wanting to grow this beauty, the largest tree on the island up (until late 1990's) covered over 2ha (5 acres) with over 1000 trunks. Not great for a suburban backyard

Ficus macrophylla var. columnaris. It is endemic to Lord Howe Island. I have a small one in my yard - hopefully it will get big, but not too big, during my lifetime.

I planted one in 1999, and by 2003 it was 4m tall and 5m wide. I had to start topping it then, but now its about 8m? tall.

Unless you are very old or have a terminal disease, this plant will get very big in your lifetime. From growth rate of these trees in NZ and Australia, and what I saw on LHI, I'm expecting that they will cover at least an acre by 50 years old if left to grow unchecked. I love them, this is the only truly temperate-adapted banyan I know of!! I've already planted about 100 of them, and have a heap more to go.

I got the room, and it seems I may have the climate. So, how do I get one of these bad boys?

Ben, are you planting them on your place or are you guerilla planting?

Not the one Buddha sat under (Ficus religiosa), but pretty big nonetheless. This is Ficus macrophylla var. columnaris, from Lord Howe Island.

Justin, I meant to ask specifically where the specimen you pictured was located? Were you there also? Thank you

Jerry, planting them at my place. No need to worry about guerilla planting, we have the fig pollinator wasp here and birds to spread the seed.

Sorry about that. I took these pictures on Lord Howe a couple of weeks ago. The pictures are of different trees. Both were taken in the area around "Middle Beach," as I recall.

Nice pic Justin. I have a Lord Howe Island Banyon that is over 20 feet tall now. It is much slower growing than my Moreton Bay Fig, but has been moving along steadily.
