Does anyone know if the old heliconia with the pink striated leaves called Heliconia indica cv spectabilis is the same as the one being sold currently as Heliconia illustris aureo striata?

I love these.I have killed a few too. They like water but need REALLY good drainage.

Did you buy a plant or rhizome?

El Oasis - beach garden, distinct wet/dry season ,year round 20-38c

Las Heliconias - jungle garden ,800m elevation,150+ inches rainfall, year round 15-28c

I tried one of these when I lived in Tampa (stupid, I know) and it didn't last long.

It should do great for you in a greenhouse though. After seeing your other photos, you seem to have perfect conditions in there.

Is anyone growing this heliconia in South Florida?

So nice and yet so HARD to grow... I have killed a few. If you can, buy plants, instead of rhizome. I had rhizome once that grew really well and then the dogs knocked it and it never recovered. If it was other heliconias, it wouldn't have killed them for sure.

Great colour on this heliconia. I am not growing this personally here but I read it was grown mainly for its leaf colour and I think that was in the pacific.

Its a small rooted plant. I hope it does well. I removed all the heliconias I used to grow from the GH and the only one I have in there now is the variegated Bihai lemai. This will be the 2nd. I have a really nice spot all cleared for it.

That is where I got mine. I have bought several things from Troy and his plants are great. SOmetimes this time of year you can get them for opening bid as the folks in colder climates are not bidding as much

Someone at the Tropiflora sale in Sarasota had what looked like this one for sale. Although it may not have been the same. The flowers weren't green but the underside of the leaf was a beautiful burgundy. I waited too long to get one. He will be at the USF sale this coming weekend he said. I think he lives in Brooksville.
