I bought this plant about six years ago from the garden section of the local Target store. I remember it was about five inches tall and cost a few bucks back then. Since I planted it in the ground two years ago, its growth has exploded. Its base has a six inch diameter and it is just over three feet tall now.

I was wondering though, when will flowers appear on this thing?

I have several p. lamerei and they start flowering when they reach about 4 ft, well, at least here in my sunny town!

I've had mine about a year and a half now. It's growing slow and was wondering if I'm doing something wrong. Is it typically very slow? I've heard it is.

It's in a well drained soil in a pot and I've learned it does not like to be moved. It's on the south side of my house now so it's warm. any thoughts???? Thanks!

Solid zone 9, I can expect at least one night in the mid to low twenties every year.

Hot, dry summers. Cold, wet winters.

It would appear then, that I have a year or two before flowers appear.

Patrick, it was my experience that it did grow slow in a pot, but that changed dramatically once it was in the ground. I have mine exposed to the full sun on the southside of my house close to my garage in a very warm microclimate, where the lamerei is prospering. It is growing next to my potted cactus garden, not visible in the pic, which is also doing well.

To summarize: Some like it hot.

Don,

You've got P. lamerii in #1 and P. geayi in #2. Some Pachy's like horombense, bispinosum, and rosulatum will flower annually when only 1' high.
