Hunting down Voyager 1

I don't know about Cycads being slow growing, this thing is a rocket.

Seedling in '21. Planted in the garden in '22 and now over 6 foot tall.

This Encephalartos was barely holding a couple of leaflets on these last leaves from its last flush.   I don't recall it flushing last year, but I see what will be the first Spring flush in my garden this year.   I don't include my flushing Encephalartos laurentianus as a spring flush because that began in January.

What a great way to start the season Gene! Right outa the gate with a Latifrons flush! Great looking good sized plant🤙

Urban Rainforest Palms,Cycads and Exotics. Were in San Diego Ca. about 5 miles from the beach on Tecolote canyon. It seems to be an ideal growing climate with moderate temps. and very little frost. Vacation Rental in Leilani Estates, big island Hi PM me if interested in staying there.

laevifolius?

Yes, good eye.  Another one I acquired from George Sparkman.   He did let me know that they sometimes completely defoliate between flushes, but this is the first year it did so completely in the roughly decade I have been its steward.

My biggest Lati is 11” in a 25 gal. as well. When I potted mine up from a 15 gal. It was completely rootbound!

It looks like it is just starting to shed a little pollen on those two bottom leaflets unless that is just a reflection.   A gentle tap will let you know.  I recall you want to collect pollen from him to do a little A I (artificial insemination) on your female ferox.
