This one came from seed I bought labeled as Encephalartos natalensis (vryheid). It has nice colors on the new flushes.

That Ituriensis is looking awesome! Did you grow that one from seed?

Thanks! Yes I grew it from seed. I had it mislabeled as Encephalartos laurentianus for a while but it became obvious that it was actually Ituriensis. My laurentianus is not as big but now that I got it in the ground I’m hopeful it will speed up.

I know this one is still just a baby and it's still inside under grow lights, but I wanted to show off anyway. I swear every time I look over here it's grown another inch. I really need to find an ideal spot for it and start ripping out grass one day. IMG_20250722_162017.thumb.jpg.ff15d86c068a6544f73ab1beaa91180a.jpg

Cool story about Bunia in Peter Heibloem’s book, Cycads of Central Africa. I never had the chance to grow Bunia but I do have many others of the Central African cycads. I had access to many different species seeds and got pretty good germination results. Most have been easy to grow in this climate but I did loose all of my E. Poggei, which rotted very easily. The others in the Poggei complex like delucanus, marunguensis, schmitzii and schaijesii have all done very well albeit they are very slow growing. I’m like you and love them all!

This Encephalartos macrostrobilus flushes one leaf at a time instead of all at once. So on this flush the first leaf came out and once fully out the next one started. Now the third one is coming out. It still a young plant so maybe it will eventually start throwing complete flushes.

Dude you got a very nice collection and quite a few plants I dont have! I think the Bunia sp. is a little bit on the rare side at least I dont see it around much. Even a google search brings up very few images. Cycads of Eudlo has coning plants of it though!

Yes, I concur.  Single leaf sequential flushes tend to be a juvenile trait which I have noticed my plants eventually grew out of.  That isn't to say your  E macrostrobilis is guaranteed to change, as I haven't grown the species so am not qualified to say.  My basis is assuming it behaves like the other Encephalartos that I have grown.

I currently have a green and a blue Encephalartos arenarius flushing at the same time. It’s interesting to see the difference between the two plants. The blue one is two headed since germination and much younger but grows a bit faster than the green one.
The blue one also has gnarlier looking leafs while the green one tends to look more organized even though it’s flushing a bit unevenly on this flush.

Thought I'd share pics of the new single fronds emerging right now on two of my Cycas debaoensis. I always hope the local critters visiting my yard don't chew on them at this stage! That's a Trachycarpus princeps in the background of the 1st picture.

Here’s a Transvenosus x Latifrons I got from Jeff @ Aloes a few years ago as a tiny strap leaf. It seems very happy now. Cycads really like these Stuewe treepots. A few more flushes and I think it will really be something to look at.

With those 2 parents it should turn out amazing! I agree about the Stuewe treepots. I ordered a couple cases of them in differant sizes this year and the plants def like them. An added plus is they take up less room than the round containers. I put them in milk crates and the small size you can put 12 to a crate and the large size you can put 6 of them and they fit perfect like they were made for them!

They are definitely worth the money. I bought a few cases of the pots in addition to their 6 pot holders. Approved!

Ooops I missed that auto fill selected Encyclia instead of Encephalartos.   I do in fact have many Encyclia orchids in addition to Encephalartos genus Cycads.

Haha I caught that but I thought maybe the taxonimist changed Encephalartos to Encyclia just like they changed Dypsis to Chysolidocarpus! 😐I was thinking now I got to change all my tags🤣
