The Deerfield Beach Arboretum will have our first annual Plant I.D. Party on Saturday, May 16.

Over the years, we have purchased many plants, mostly flowering trees and palms, that for one reason or another have lost their tags. Maybe the writing faded (Jeff, hint hint) maybe the tag got lost in a repotting, maybe it was bought as one thing but turned out to be different. Maybe we know the genus but not the species. For whatever reason, we have lots of plants, trees and palms that are mislabeled or unlabeled. This is where all you ID geniuses come in.

We are going to have a contest to see who can identify the most plants. There will be prizes and booby prizes. There will be lunch. There will be an auction. There might even be adult beverages.

All the details are not hashed out yet but we ask you to bring a covered dish, perhaps a plant to donate to the arboretum and a plant for the auction. You can bring anything that will garner interest at the auction.

What do y'all think?

Jerry,

When you first mentioned this several months ago, I thought this was a great idea. Unfortunately, I think I'm going to be out of town that weekend down in the Keys. :rage: I was really looking forward to coming up and being a part of it. I'm still willing to send up a plant for the auction in support of the gardens. If any dates change, please let us know. I hope the turn out is good and lots of pictures will be taken and posted for all of us to enjoy.

This was a great idea from the very moment you mentioned it a few months ago, Jerry. It would be a great way to introduce people to the arboretum. Keep us all posted of the details and what ever date you choose.

Sounds like a great idea. Not sure if I'll be able to make it though (out here in CA, 'til ???). If nothing else, take some pics of stuff that others can't figure out and I'll see what I can do. Will let you know my schedule as the date approaches.

That would be great if it's scheduled for the 23rd. We can make it if this is the date. I have 2-3 people already expressing interest in riding along with us. WE WILL....come up with a few names! :) Keep us posted when you get further along.

Any closer to dates?

There are mostly flowering trees and palms that need IDs, but there might be some shrubs or others thrown into the mix. Most of the palms I know the genus, just not the species. There are a few totally unknown palms. The genera that you need to bone up on are:

Dypsis of course

Ptychosperma

Sabal

Pseudophoenix

Latania

Copernicia

Gaussia

The Flowering Trees are varied but some of the genera to concentrate on are:

Tabebuia

Lonchocarpus

Gustavia

Cassia

Senna

Brachychiton

This year was the best year for blooms that we've ever had in the Arboretum. Here are some pics from this spring. Many of these have faded now but some are still blooming and there is always something blooming in the Arboretum.

The Deerfield Beach Arboretum is a ten acre Park owned by the City of Deerfield Beach. We have divided the arboretum into several gardens; Flowering Tree Garden, Fruit Garden, Florida Native Wetlands, Butterfly Garden, Dry Garden and a few Palm Gardens. In addition we have a Japanese Garden with Torii Gate, Azumayas and a Zen Garden.

Would there be any interest in having a short pictoral presentation just before or after lunch? I ask because someone has offered to do this andit is a subject that most find interesting. I am just wondering if it will become too busy and will be enjoyed.

Well, for those of us that might be coming there, ( Bill Sanford should surprise us and fly in) what might a short pictoral presentation be on? Inquiring minds need to know.

Jeff

Jeff, since Jerry hasn't yet responded, I guess I will jump in and say that I have offered to give a PowerPoint presentation entitled "Taxonomical, Nomenclatural & Biogeographical Revelations in the Zamia skinneri Complex of Central America (Cycadales: Zamiaceae)." The talk is about 30 minutes long, and it explains the results of our paper with the same name that was published last November (Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society 158:399-429). It will show habitat photos of five species of pleated-leaf zamias in Panama (including three that are newly described), as well as provide the background information on how we came to our conclusions regarding this well-known but largely misunderstood species complex.

Would there be any interest in this type of presentation?

I am putting the last minute preparations in place and picking out the UFOs (Unidentified Flowering Objects) and UPOs (Unidentified Palmy Objects). Some are big, some are small, some have flowers, some none at all.

I hope everyone brings plenty of bribe money so even bad ID people have a chance.

My wife Andrea and I look forward to going up on saturday. In all the years, I can't think of another time when a Botanical Garden offered to put together such an event like this one. It really looks like it will be alot of fun. It will be my first time visiting there.

I realize the group of readers following this topic is extreamly small, but I was just curious who else from the forum here might be planning on going.

Jerry, Thanks for putting this even together. It was neat to revisit the Tree Zoo with an appreciation for horticulture. Even with the foul weather it was still a treat for me.

Jody, Thanks for presenting your information re: Zamias You delivered information in way that layman like myself could understand. That really helped to open my eyes to a cool group of plants. Only problem is I now want a Z hamannii. :)

Good to see the rest of you there. Borgy and Cohen, ya'll seriously missed out!
