It rained all weekend, but I did sneak these 3 photos in on Friday. Can you name the blooms in each of these 3 photos?

Keith, you got me on photos 2 & 3. Photo 1 looks like azaleas (purple blooms) but I can't see flowers well enough to be absolutely certain.

I'll take a wild stab at it...

1. 'Formosa' Azalea (w/ dogwood in background)

2. Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (Brunfelsia pauciflora)

3. Flowers? All I see are Mardi Gras beads in a crape myrtle... but maybe the pine is flowering in the background. :)

You got 2 out of 3 in picture 1.

You got 1 out of 2 in picture 2.

And you got picture 3 with the Mardia Gras beads hanging in the still dorman Crape Myrtles on the Lafayette Parade Route.

At this point we are ready to pass along the rain. It has been non-stop for the last 3 days, but at least it is a good steady light soak it all in kind of rain.

And yes on the Camellia.

Kieth:

I didn't think Brunfelsia would grow in Loosianne!

Hmm. Jumping the gun just a bit on those Crape Myrtles . . . . .

When do the Crape Myrtles bloom over there? Here they start in May and end about September.

Let's keep our forum fun and friendly.

Place in favored microclimates Brunfelsia grow just fine here. This one is under the edge of a Live Oak canopy where it gets full morning sun.

The Crapes bloom about the same time frame here as with you, I was just having a little fun with Mardi Gras beads on that one, which early bloom on quite a few trees along the parade routes.

Keith--

Of course it's not fair since I'm in your general vicinity, but it's too easy as the same things are popping here as well:

1) Dogwood, Azalea, Camellia

2) Brunfelsia pauciflora

3) Arborus mardigrasensis

The fun thing is that here in Natchez we also have number 3. I think we must be the northernmost outpost of that species. They line the streets downtown. Blooms every February or thereabouts, and always seems to happen right after the parades.

Dave: Brunfelsias do beautifully in the hot, humid Gulf South. Very popular here, and they surprisingly hold their foliage into the low or mid-20s. One of the best is one of the most beautiful: the Brunfelsia that Monrovia has been marketing the last couple of years as 'Brunfelsia magnifica.' This very tropical-looking Brunfelsia has larger, very rugose leaves and has stayed evergreen for me here at 23-24F even with freezes lasting 15 hours or so. Wonderfully fragrant. Drops a few leaves in a drying arctic wind but not bad at all. Also this type blooms more often throughout the year than the typical Brunfelsia pauciflora 'floribunda.' I lived in SoCal most of my life and was surprised upon moving to Natchez to find Brunfelsias being sold here, I think we southern California natives think it thrives only in a cool, misty climate. But it loves it here. Same goes for Tibouchina. Who woulda thunk it?
