Its native to parts of western and southwestern Madagascar and gets a nice swollen trunk. Delonix adansonioides is a synonym.

I think it grows 10-20ft tall. It bears small yellowish flowers.

I found this image online;

Hey Dennis-nice tree! I've got a couple of them; they grow quickly, especially when you give them plenty of summer water, although they will live on very little if they have to. Keep them dry in the winter though; they will shed their leaves for several months. My largest is about 8' tall in 2 years from a small 1g plant. It's still skinny and I've heard it takes many years for them to really fatten up. They don't get very tall-I'm guessing about 15-20' max. I just mentioned this in another thread, but someone living in Madagascar(Bruno?) posted a thread a while back and in it there was a mature D. floribunda looking very much like a miniature Baobob. If you like the Delonix,another tree that gets a swollen trunk is Moringa drouhardii. It's also a fast grower, and it starts to bulge much sooner than the Delonix. There's a current thread where Eric has a photo of his young Moringa.

I have a delonix from Madagascar that looks very similar. I never knew what I had... until last year when I went to Brisbane. This is the one at Mt. Cootha Botanical garden.

Oooh thanks all.

Looks like I picked a winner. Now, where to plant it.

Peter: The conditions you describe are exactly what we get here, dry winter and wet summer, should grow like a weed! Thanks for the other suggestion, I'll have to see if they are available here....

Thanks Eric, Ari and Fouquieria for the great pics!
