I just bought a plant of the above description - it was labled as a 'Cool Climate Fruiting Banana'.

After searching the net, I found info about Red Dacca and Dwarf Red varieties, but nothing about Dwarf Red Dacca!

Just wondering if anybody has heard of such a beast? And if it is truly cold tolerant?

I plan to grow it in my big poly tunnel, but it still gets pretty cold in there - my other non-denominational banana suffers badly each winter....

Cheers,

Jonathan

I know someone who has one , but as to cold tolerance .. well it survived the great chill of 07 that killed lots of Lipsticks and defoliated Breadfruit ... If so many can fruit them in Melb outside , you will do Ok in a tunnel Jonathan

Michael in palm paradise,

Tully, wet tropics in Australia, over 4 meters of rain every year.

Home of the Golden Gumboot, its over 8m high , our record annual rainfall.

Thanks Micheal....I sometimes wonder if I shouldn't have chosen a more climatically suitable hobby!

But there would be no fun in that......

Do you have a source for Red Dacca and Ducasse?

Oh I think you'd still find fun in your garden Jonathan, even if your climate was more suitable for the plants you love. No matter where you live there are always some challenges, pluses or minuses.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Sorry Lee, I missed this one....

I just found the plants at a local nursery, in fact several nurseries had them, someone must have brought a big shipment of them in.

My brother planted one outside in the open - an unseasonal frost almost destroyed it a couple of weeks ago, but it lives on - just.

Mine is powering away under plastic. The temperature in my polytunnel has been down to 0.5C overnight, it didn't blink.

So as long as it gets no frost, it might make it outside ok here.

Al - thats a very positive philosophy, and I suspect you may be right!

Cheers,

Jonathan
