small plant shows serieus damage on the leaves. leaves feels a bit soft and looks very light green. the bud looks still fine but i wonder for how long. (update coming spring)

Mid 20's every winter for a night or two. Little or no damage. L decora, L. saribus, and L. nitida are all hardier than L. chinensis in my opinion. Oh, and they grow much faster too. Jury is still out on L drudei, however.

Many hours below freezing with an ultimate low around 20 degrees. Small palms (3 gallon size) all toast with spear pull, looking pretty dead, I have a feeling if these were older they would have been fine.

Update April 2010: Only one of mine survived, again I think these would have been fine if they had been larger. In addition I lost two small Livistona marie.

I have a 2y.o. l. Decora protected in a greenhouse by snow rain and wind, during 2 days we had -7 C and -5 C by night and -3 C and 0 C by day. The palm has no damage after 4 months and it's growing

better performing than washingtonia and queens for me.

14 days with sub 32degrees F, ultimate low around 17/18. covered with small blanket. about 20% leaf burn, 2 spears pulled and so did 2 fronds.

palm was 1 year in the ground from a 7gal. first winter and it did great on a record cold year.

This palm grew very well the following spring/summer and was approximately 10ft tall (tip of highest frond) by winter of 2010/2011. The following very hard winter of three days below 32F with an ultimate low of 17F was too much. All fronds were torched, but many petioles remained green until April at which point the entire palm turned brown. The spear and growing point were easily pulled. Surprisingly, many smaller L. decora (growing point still underground) in the yard survived.

Mature palms lining I-45 in Houston look fine (just some tip damage) after two winters with lows around 20*F and a few days with afternoon highs below freezing. They actually looked comparable to the Washingtonia hybrids growing beside them...

If you are referring to the ones along Interstate 45 south of downtown planted about 5 years ago, Hobby airport is the closest airport, they had no daytime highs of 32 or below, and the coldest was only 23 this winter. I saw them a couple weeks ago, and they were alive but looked a little rough. Mine had little damage last winer after 15.5 but died this winter after a low of 17 because the duration of below 20 was much longer.

Oops, my bad, should've checked the weather data before making the statement. There were quite a few days with highs below 40*F though. Sorry to hear about your L. decora, how did L. chinensis fare up north?

Three L. decora scattered around my yard have survived this winter's low of 17F with 36 consecutive hours below freezing. These palms were plants after 2011 when the previously described palm died.  All plants have 1 - 3 foot of trunk and survived with significant damage to fronds but no spear pull. All appear to be growing well now.
