They're the biggest orchid flowers I have ever seen.

Makes the other plants, including that fan palm, look really tiny

The first orchid is a Dendrobium phalenopsis type, which is different from the true phalenopsis in a number of details.

Daryl,  beautiful Dendrobium!  Your yard looks very lush :)

Posted

Thanks Jacob. My aim is to have a totally 'lush' garden. It is certainly looking lush this week as we have finally had some decent rain..175mm.

This plant is Dendrobium bigibbum, the Cooktown Orchid, The floral emblem of Queensland.

Daryl

One really easy Den to grow is D. moschatum , comes from the Himalayas so must have some cold tolerance , but it grows very well in tropical climate . It has nice long psuedobulbs , up to 2 m , and they hang down eventually , so it needs to be mounted up high . New growth is a dark purple , and flowers are an orange colour . It can even take fairly bright light as the tree this clump is in got pruned right back and the orchid was in full sun for several months , no leaf scorching at all !!
