I think they all grow fine here in SoFla but the blooming might not be as much as in Oz or Cantaffordya. There just aren't that many big ones here to really get a good idea of their characteristics.

Jerry,

Thanks for the info. I am patient so I think I will try one. I like different things.

I have only seen young B. acerifolius but also have heard that don't flower as showy in FL. Ours has grown to about 15ft but no flowers yet.

I have seen them in the big box store garden centers around here

This is my grafted acerifolius that I planted the other day. It would seem that the leaf shape changes and is becoming more lobed as it gets larger.

The new growth seems to have a rusty colour before it turns green. I think this might be one of the hybrids I've read about, but I have no idea which one.

Its also a very fast grower, compared to other plants anyway. Every few days it seems to have a new flush of leaves.

Brachychiton acerifolius is a common street tree and garden tree in the west. I'm growing this one and Brachychiton obtusilobus a West Autralian native.

Best regards

How long from seed before B. acerifolius flowers? Mine has been in the ground about 3 years here in Austin.

Here are some pix.

Matt,

he planted them out about 20-25 years ago from 1g plants, but he said they've been fat for years. Deep watering about once a week.

Thank you Peter, I would have thought older, but I'm glad, as this gives me hope that I'll see mine fatten up in my life time.

Hi,

I just bought a house , my building inspector pointed the bottle tree which is very thick . It is 1m-1.5 m away from my house . He reckons it is taking too much moisture from the soil as it is close to house and might damage the structure. I don’t want to kill it. I want to keep it but in other way i tried putting on FB marketplace. Got lots of offer even $500. What should i do with the tree. I really want to keep it. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/684252816120369/

Bud,  Welcome to the Forum..

When you can, please post a couple pictures of the tree, and how close to the house.   A location might be helpful as well.

Having tons of these around here ( Live in Chandler, AZ )  Have never heard of them being a hazard, though honestly, if it is within 3 ft of your foundation, that could be an issue, even for trees that don't have invasive / aggressive root systems...

As far as digging it to either relocate ..or sell ( hopefully not, they are cool trees.. ), Not sure how Brachychiton  handle transplant stress but have heard of sizable specimens being moved successfully.  Smaller ones would probably respond better when moved though.

As far as $$ for selling.. If you decided to, that's a personal decision of course, but, if it is a sizable specimen, $500. might be a tad low on what i might ask..

Probably been in the ground close to 20 years from a 1 gallon pot.  This was in Nov of 2019
