Acacia holosericea-flowering and big leaves/phyllodes

Recommended Posts

Acacia holosericea is flowering now. This is a neat tree. It had the feathery pinnate leaves when it was a seedling but now has large entire phyllodes. This tree was sprouted from seeds in summer 2004 and planted out in Oct. 2004. It quickly grew to the size it is now. It flowered last year for the first time but not heavy. This year the tree is covered. Nobody guesses this is an Acacia when I show it to them. Its native to northern Australia.

Eric,

A very cool tree for sure, and I would of never guessed that it was an Acacia tree. Will it grow down here in South Florida, or does it prefer cooler weather? And alot of Acacia trees are brittle, how does this one hold up in wind?

It should grow well in SoFL, this is a more subtropical/tropical species. The only limiting factor I can think of would be pH but many Acacia do well on alkaline soil.

As for wind, its held up thru the daily summer storms but it was planted after the 3 2004 hurricanes so not sure how it holds up in hurricanes. Its seems to be a sturdy tree.
