I assume that African Tulip is in California, correct? That would be very surprising and it must be getting lots of extra water. Nice pics Dave.

Actually, African Tulip Trees are very common in So. Cal. There are a few in my neighborhood and I see them on the side of the freewways here in San Diego. I have a large one myself. My blooming time is usually September but I see them blooming as early as April around here. The yellow form is particularly nice. Yes, they need lots of irrigation.

Yup, they are becoming avenue trees in OC now. They plant them in the green belts along the freeway and along sidewalks now.

Dave...is that Royal Poinciana in Scal? I would love to do a drive by sometime.

With time they can get as big as those in HI. If anyone has been to the San Diego Zoo, you can see what I mean. But the one bonus, they do not naturalize here. :)

Regarding Delonix regia -- Well, I have to say they bloom pretty well here in Southern California. I have many

Southern California tree pictures in a photobucket album that I have posted in past D. regia threads.

I'll post it again though. I continue to add to this album as I discover new trees for the non-believers.

Dave, is your posted picture of the D. regia located at Fullerton Arboretum? It looks very familiar. I have many pictures

of this tree.

As far as Spathodea canpanulata (African Tulip Tree) they are very common in San Diego. They have naturalized at

the San Diego Zoo and parts of Balboa Park and some of our neighborhoods like North Park. Actually, yesterday I took

pictures of three blooming trees in the Western Edition of Balboa park. These trees were planted two years ago, 2 red/orange

and one yellow/Gold, they're around 18' tall. I noticed 15 volunteer seedlings around these trees.

The largest African Tulip tree at the San Diego Zoo has a trunk diameter of two feet and was planted in 1969 according

to a Zoonooz magazine article. I'm guessing that most of the other trees at the S.D. Zoo came from seedlings from this tree.

I'll post some of my hundreds of African tulip trees I've taken pictures of over the last couple of years in a new thread soon.

Palms '84....I appreciate the views. Might have to hit San Diego this weekend. Dang, I was just there saturday with the fishes...saw a lot of tropicals but no Delonix. Hunter's nursery you say...hmmmm.

I just can't see this tree escaping like in HI or FL. It is too dry here past some nice public gardens like the Zoo. The one planted in 1969 is the one I was referring too. Largest I know of in SoCal.

Everyone:

Both the Spathodea and the Delonix are in the Fullerton Arboretum, a few miles south of my place, in California.

Don't know how much water they get, but I'm sure they get more than Nature provides, especially the Spath . . .

I'm pretty sure the big tulip tree at the Zoo is more than 3 feet in diameter. There are many of these trees at the zoo. My old neighborhood had a 20 footers. This tree grow pretty fast. I was wanted to grow one in my yard but thought twice about it because of the size of the tree and the falling leaves and flower petals.

Big Frond:

You are right, the large African Tulip tree at the San Diego Zoo probably has a trunk diameter of over 3'. I was

looking at my many pictures of this tree when I posted my comment yesterday...it is very difficult to judge size

from a picture.

I also wanted to mention at the Natural History Museum in Balboa Park, there are many seedlings from the large tree there.

Unfortunately the other large tree blew down around 4 years ago in a horrible wind/rain storm. However, I have monitored

one tree in particular. I sprouted in the summer of 2006 and grew to around 10 ft tall and now it is appoximately 23' tall.

It is located on the southeastern part of the Natural History Museum. I'll post a recent picture.

I wanted to add the parent tree to the above posted African Tulip tree. It is about 35' tall.

Aloha - the African Tulip Tree flowers are beautiful, and I think the orange and the yellow flowered trees are both nice tropical-looking additions to landscapes over on the mainland. Unfortunately, this tree is highly invasive here in Hawaii. When each tree releases its numerous seeds, they float through the air for great distances because each seed is encapsulated in a little cellophane-like thing which makes it fly like a kite in a stiff March breeze. Digging the new emerging African Tulip Tree sprouts out of a Hawaii yard each year is something we tropical gardeners do not look forward to.

Another tidbit of African Tulip Tree info noted in the web site http://www.answers.com/topic/african-tulip-tree:

"The flower bud is ampule shaped and contains water. These buds are often used by children who play with its ability to squirt the water."

If you sniff the water inside these crushed flower buds, you may be surprised - to my nose and for many others, it REALLY stinks...

KONADANTOM:

I know how The Big Island has been invaded by these trees, I have a lot of relatives in Hilo. I have seen many Valleys north of Hilo

just completely forested with African Tulips trees and Alexander Palms. It is a beautiful sight, however, it strangles out the native

vegetation. Here in San Diego we fortunately don't have that problem because we only receive about 7 - 10 inches of rain a year.

I know areas north of Hilo can get almost 200 inches of rain a year. In San Diego someone will plant a tree in their yard and then

where neighbors water or there's an irrigation system you will see them germinate in the strangest places.

I'm posting a picture of one of my favorite African Tulip Tree in Balboa Park.

Aloha Andy and Mahalo for posting the very nice photo of Balboa Park with the beautiful orange-colored blossoms on the African Tulip tree. The San Diego area has a very nice climate - I have fond childhood memories of living next to the beach in Carlsbad.

On Saturday I’ll be driving over to Hilo-side for a “local-style” sumo-sized lunch at Ken’s and then stay over with friends in Puna District for Labor Day Weekend celebrations. The drive through those 3 Hamakua-Hilo Coast gulches is always a treat - the steep lush green hillsides are just loaded with those beautiful invasive Alexander King Palms, which seem much happier growing here than the King Palms did at my old place in the Oakland hills.
