This poor little cactus wound up in the shade too long. When I pulled it out, it had a severe scale infestation. So, I decided to test the coffee grounds and coffee spray cure right here. I have treated the soil with grounds and sprayed with sun brew coffee. You will note in the first week, some browning on the edge of the scale. No this is not coffee stains. The sections have died back and can be easily flaked off with a thumbnail.

I will continue the treatments and post updates here.

Keith, you've convinced me...I'm going to try the same thing on some plants here at The Flatts.

Oh yeh, just an opened ended FYI, don't ever try insecticidal soap on a cactus...i found out the hard way....turns black in 24 hrs and mush the next day....cactus goo is a bitch to clean up.

Looking forward to the updates

Nice work Keith. Please keep us updated.

Rusty, that's wierd about the insecticidal soap on cactus. I couldn't kill a clump of prickly pear type cactus using triple strength roundup. It seems immune to glyphosate.

Rusty, in all my years of growing C/S I've always used the soap with great success. Possibly too high a dilution rate? I do know that it can scorch the hell outta Maidenhair ferns. Try using a very diluted soil surfactant in a spray bottle, works good too. Always test the strength of your sprays on unsuspecting critters like ants.

Matt and Gonzer....the cactus had come from the island here growing in a wooded lot and carted back to Maryland....one winter i put it inside and hightailed it down here for the winter, and when i got back in March the thing was loaded with scale....The soap was one of those pre-mixed sprays, Safer's i think.

The kicker is, i was a licensed certified PCO and should have known better than make a wholesale application without doing a spot test....dumb move.
