Most folks here treat them as annuals. They buy them blooming, put them out for Christmas then toss them afterwards.

I think of them as a biennial. I grab as many of the toss outs as I can and plant them in the garden. They look good all year and bloom again for me in November. Ultimately the freezes of January do take them out, but only after I get a second year of bloom out of them.

I do know of one in a protected microclimate here that has lasted many years in the humid subtropical climate.
