(The Coconut Orchid), Waxy 1" reddish flowers nestled within the foliage produce an intoxicating coconut fragrance in the spring.  Here's a couple photos of our plant growing in a hanging basket.  Just took the pics yesterday.  Yes they are delightfully fragrant.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

 

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).  

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.  

Nice sunsets!

I reckon it smells like the fragrance used in ' Hawaiin Tropic Suntan Oil ' but maybe twice as strong .. since when does a coconut smell like anything ?? its a bit fake but somehow oddly attractive .. Its on my must get list .

Anyone knows the botanical name? Just in case the lady has given it away to someone else... I would love to know what it is actually called.
