Hello to All,

Today my niece asked if I would sprout her a mango tree from seeds. Can decent mangoes be grown this way or do they have to be grafted onto root stock like citrus? Or would she/I do better buying a young mango tree from a nursery? How long do they take before setting usable fruit? Finally, what mangoes work best in a 1/4-acre yard here in SW FL? Thanks, everyone.

Meg

The only mango that will breed true from seeds is Nam Doc Mai. Unfortunately the rest of them are hybrids and won't breed true. So, you have to get grafted tree to get nice eating mangoes.

BTW, you can keep the trees pruned straight after fruiting. So, it is manageable for your 1/4 acres - and manageable to actually harvest the fruits.

If you want consistent quality fruit quickly, plant a grafted tree.

If you want your niece to take a keener interest in plants (i.e.--learn patience), show her how to grow it from seed.

BTW, they're easiest to sprout from seed if you split the "husk" before planting. Bury on edge in good potting soil and grow in a warm to hot location.

SoCal and SoFla; zone varies by location.

Interesting thing about growing fruit trees from seed is that it is a gamble. You might end up with a tree that takes many years to start fruiting and that fruits light at that; or you might end up with the next great hybrid variety that excels as far north as Tallahassee. :)

this mango tree is around 45 years old and its not the grafted form or hybrid.this variety is very popular with the people from banglore_the variety is popularly called as Kili muku(locally).

it is not very sweet but its is very useful to make pickels and for cooking delicacies out of it.but as a ripe fruit its not as tasty as our alphonsa, malgova, bangana palli or rumani mangos....

love,

Kris  :)
