After quickly putting together an (overhead) irrigation system to keep my nursery alive during my week in Austin, I came home last night to see that it worked--most everything was alive after a quick nighttime tour. Then the morning light, the "ugly" reality--a rusty, oily film on everything!! Aarghhh!

I knew my water was full of rust (the oil is probably from some toxic waste sight contaminating my well--I don't really want to know--I just hold my nose while drinking it!!). Of course, no rain to help clean off the leaves...

So if you come to the Ramble this weekend, my plants will be the ones glistening in the sun! Trust me, they were all green last week (and the months before as well)...

Our well water is very high in iron too. I have to take those little filters out of the sprinkler heads in the greenhouse because they clog with iron sludge, and replace the sprinkler heads altogether about every 2-2.5 years.

Godd ol' iron sulfate. when ever we are driving somewhere and someone is running well irrigation you can smell it. My girlfriend always accuses me of cutting one in the car.
