Retail nurseries greater Cairns area Queensland Australia

Recommended Posts

Anyone familiar with nurseries, garden centres near and in Cairns,  North Queensland? Im looking for unusual palms, foliage plants, Cordylines, Codiaeums that sort of thing? Will be there next week and would like to visit a few good ones in between diving amongst the fishes. Most on the internet seem to be either mail order or wholesalers. Any info would be very well recieved. Thanks.

Try Equatorial Exotics. You may have to make an appointment but I've heard they have some great stuff.

My advice would be to have some specific plants in mind that you can ask about.

Arden is not overly interested in a "tour" per se.

The website is wayyyy out of date, Definately a mind blowing array of species

Flecker gardens is a must see also

Cheers

Yes definitely going to the Botanical gardens thanks Steve. Hmmm that's a problem if the site is "wayyyy" out of date, do they do lists because it is rather hard to know if Im interested in anything in particular without a "tour" self drive or otherwise. If for example I found a lovely large Licuala mattanensis I would be very interested but it's not necessarily the sole driving force of my wish list. Do they sell plants? I mean is it retail, wholesale or a private collection?

I have no doubt that Arden and Chris have things that you will be very interested in. This is there home with a huge tropical shadehouse and treasures planted out.

They certainly have mattanensis at size. They sell plants but it is not set up as a retail nursery in the normal sense. It is a bit of a mix of collection and nursery(ie not everything is for sale). Arden supplied lots of palms for the new shadehouse at Flecker. Shame  the Geonoma epetiolata and most of the atrovirens are now dead. He may even have an atrovirens for sale as he had small ones for sale earlier in the year.

By out of date I mean they have way more than on the site.

Cheers

Thats a shame! Wonder what went wrong, too dry? Talking of Geonoma atrovirens I've always wanted Salacca magnifica, or very fresh seed/fruit thereof. Lets hope lots is fruiting, not that I would touch a thing but try and turn on the old charm instead.

Im sure I'll do fine plant wise, I always seem to, in fact given it's Cairns even Bunnings or Mitre10 is likely to have something that will set Bali on fire. Do you know if Helga's Nursery is still in buisness because I will be staying around Port Douglas?

Helgas is open with a new owner .. Mossman markets worth a visit .. Cape Oasis usually have a stall there .

Limberlost is still around ..one of the oldest nurseries up here . Look up Mark Lomas around Mossman also. He should have some nice collector palms .

No one does lists anymore .

Michael in palm paradise,

Tully, wet tropics in Australia, over 4 meters of rain every year.

Home of the Golden Gumboot, its over 8m high , our record annual rainfall.
