Pink Pseudobombax ellipticum fruit

Do Pseudobombax pods and seeds mature if taken off the tree?

I collected some pods off a local tree and opened one, both the fruit and the seeds were immature.

I left them to rest in the sun, hope they can mature. Anyone has experience with something like this?

Honestly,  it will be a gamble..  The un- opened pods might, esp the larger of the 4,   but only if closer to being fully ripened rather that being collected mid -way through the process,  or at an earlier stage in development when collected.

IMO, seeds from the opened pod look pretty close to have completed development,  so the others might be able to finish up, even off the tree.  Will be black / dark brownish when fully ripe.

If all else fails,  check on the same tree every so often..  Imagine it won't be too much longer < few more weeks to 2 months, at the longest, if i remember correctly > before they're ripe / opening.  ..One of those trees that wants to get it's seeds dispersed before the rainy season starts.

When you see any seed pods on it starting to split open /  cottony " fluff " that surrounds the seeds peeking out from them? they'll ready to go.

The tree had a lot of opened pods already, but they were too high to reach, those opened pods were actually the main objective. I couldn't take any photos of the tree. Forgot to.

Also found this article that says that pods are usually collected before opening and they let them rest, then proceed to open them.

Check on the ground under /near the tree.. esp. anywhere where seed might collect. While they might have some fluff on them, they tend to be heavy and don't drift much once they hit the ground.

Did this when collecting off big silk floss trees in a garden years ago.  Full pods were hanging like 25ft above my head, lol.. No way i was going to get at those, ha ha.

Collected what seeds i could find in grass / rocky spots nearby.

Yeah I plan to go again to see if more opened, I just hope the lady who owns the trees doesn't get annoyed.

The trees are pruned from time to time so they stay small, the lady told me her mother planted them and she didn't knew what they were. They are the only trees in my town that I know produce seed.

Not having to deal w/ seedlings that might pop up / less messiness from any fluff blowing around,  and having met you already / seeing that your intentions are purely innocent,  imagine the owner wouldn't get annoyed about that.

Fine if this thought isn't totally correct, but,  seems people there in Mex / from there ..more of them than here at least..  are happy to share plants or seeds w/ others..  Been my experience at least.

The owner is very kind actually but I don't know if she might think it's annoying to recieve the same stranger 2 times just for them to collect seeds, lol.

Always a risk,  but one worth taking..

Who knows,  maybe you end up introducing the owner to a new palm / something else they might not be aware of  through any future exchanges.

I see there are more recent pink flowered Pseudobombax  observations around Monterey on iNat  too.

They have been becoming popular this decade, I have a seed grown pink Pseudobombax but it didn't flower this year and actually it's still sleeping, no noticeable new growth yet.

@Silas_Sancona Looks like they are losing water after some hours of full sun, is this good or bad?

I'd give 'em another 24 -36 hours, then see how loose the outer cap / cover / shell??  ..whatever you want to call it..   is..

When the fluff inside is starting to push through, they' should be ready.  As mentioned, seed should be dark colored and hard, like a dried Pea and sink,  if you do a float test.

Lighter colored seed may be a gamble. Some may germinate while others don't

I gave them to Richtrav from Texas and he already has them in the United States, I saved 2 seeds for myself and they are turning brown now, they look good, now I have to wait until they sprout.
