Is anyone growing Lytocaryum insigne? I was reading that it had better cold tolerance than weddellianum and was curious if anyone had observed this?

You might try using the ‘search’ feature on this site, lots of info on this particular palm which will hopefully answer your question.

You might want to contact @Alberto since he's one of only a few here growing one outdoors where it experiences occasional freezes.  @dalmatiansoap might also have one outdoors - perhaps they can give you some info.  @Josh76 gave an unfortunate experience in the thread above.

Definitely not much info out there. Do you know of any seed sources?

@MobileBayGarden I bought a 1g from ChuckG last year, it did ok in my nursery area with about 32F and frost, and a couple of other frosts in the 30s.  From Kinzyjr's spreadsheet of reports it looks like Hoehnei might be ok to around 20F and Weddellianum to 25F.  I haven't seen any reports on Insigne.

I have heard rumors of cold hardiness similar to a queen…they are uncommon. I have thought about purchasing one to try myself…Let us know what you come across!! Super interesting!

Finding one for sale is my big issue at the moment. If anyone has a lead please let me know. 🙏🙏🙏

That is a shame! Is there no way around it even for seeds?

I have two that are at flowering size. My Weddellianum sets seed already at the same size. In the pic, it’s the one in the middle, plants to left and right are my Insigne. Insigne Is a much better Palm in IMHO. Fatter leaflets, super silver underneath and the petioles are loaded with dense dark brown hairs. Bigger plant in general from wispy, skinnier Weddellianum. My Insigne are around 12 years old.

😱 Absolutely Beautiful!!! Put me on the list for seed from either of they produce. Thank you for sharing. What low temps have they seen? I have read that insigne is picky about growing medium. Have you had any issues with soil? Thanks again for sharing.

insignis are definitly nicer than weddellianum 😍
you can put me on the list too haha.

@MobileBayGarden for soil, the mix advised by @Pal Meir works pretty well, at least for weddelinum and hoehnei.

Thank you, I'll definitely give that mix a try after I find a source for the components.
