Brahea Edulis Seeds

Featured Replies

How do I scarify these brahea edulis seeds? I tried planting some from another website in regular potting soil,  but they didn't sprout after 2 years. If you can, could you give detailed instructions on what to do to plant them? Thanks!

I think you might find these links helpful.  Good luck!

Could you help me find where I should "de-lid" the seeds on the pictures I gave? Thanks!

@Grasswing has an arrow pointing to the spot where you can de-lid (operculum) a Brahea seed in the second link above.  You might have to rotate your seed to locate the operculum.  It looks like it's right above your thumb in your first photo but I don't see it in the others.

I've had great success germinating Brahea edulis seeds for a couple reasons I believe.

1) I have access to fresh seeds (collected off the tree by shaking the flower). I collect a few dozen or so at a time and soak them in water for 2-3 days with the older flesh still on.

- after a few days of soaking, I take them out and put them on a concrete slap or sidewalk. I use my boots to step down on the seeds and press and grind the seed against the concrete to remove the pulp and to scarify the seeds.

- after removing the pulp, I put the seeds in good draining potting soil (lots of perlite etc.) and water through. I try to keep only 1 layer of seeds across whatever pot I am using so the germinated seedlings don't grow over each other.

- germination usually takes 2-3 months and I transfer to deep, skinny pots to allow the roots to run deep.

good luck and try your best to get the best, freshest seeds!
