I planted this coconut just under 2 years ago February of 2023. It already had bad freeze damage from the nursery because it went through 3 nights around 28degrees. Last winter our coldest night was 35 with no frost. So far this year we have had many many nights below 40. We had 1 night at 35 with very bad frost. We had to use scrapers on our windshields. Anyway I am located inland hudson, FL. Many big nice fruiting coconuts a few miles from me in part richey and hudson beach.

I have burn barrels i plan to use around it when we get below freezing. I also ran heat tape in a spiral outwards around trunk under the mulch. The heat tape has kept the soil about 5 deg warmer than my other coconuts that have 0 protection.

Anyway pictures of it and how it has 0 new damage from this years frost.

It has also flowered and currently has coconuts.

It looks so pristine! Have you noticed the leaves showing less and less sign of damage each year?

It looks great!  I swore off coconuts since they take so much damage at a large size when a big freeze comes, but did an adonidia in a spot with a little bit of canopy as a test plant. It took minor damage on a few leaves unprotected, as a short little cluster of three, all damage on the smallest trunk.  I feel like a few traditional 10b palms are like these and damage easily here but recover after since a freeze is usually short.  When we get a long duration cold event is when they go to mush, this one just happened early enough that it wasnt bad. But in january? That stretch of weather would be colder and damage a certainty.  With all my experiments in the yard it also gives me a chance to see who is tougher compared to the adonidia (since its a well known plant). Then i know how far to protect the others once that big event comes, and can compare the success to the unprotected adonidia that could very well be dead after.  Good luck for the next cold wave, hoping its short lived!

It looks great, @HudsonBill!  I'm tapping my foot waiting on mine to set off some coconuts, but it feels like I'm running out of time.

Last year we hit the same temp as we have so far this year and there was a lot of damage that was with some protection. The palm then was a little less than 1 year in the ground. Im sure it being much more established and super healthy has helped it this year.

I look at it this way if I have to replace it every couple years it's worth it! But I have fire pits I planted to light when it gets below freezing. I put them like right at the edge of the drip line of the palm all around it and pull an all nighter tending fires. I know I can keep it alive it may never look the best but as long as it stays alive through those realy cold spells im ok with it. Interestingly enough I have 3 other coconuts no idea on variety on the big guy or the 2 on the side of my house but the 2 on the side of my house damage so easy. I have a Jamaican tall that's still a seedling it's under canopy no protection and was just planted this year. It has 0 damage just like the big one.  I have 2 adonidias aswell I dug them out of someone's yard last year they are huge and have been doing great but one started declining over the summer. That one looks rough after this cold the other looks great still.  Im anxious to see how my royal and foxtails do and my king Alexander's.  All of those so far still beautiful and growing.

I need to do an update on the plants in the ground after this cold too. After a warm day they should be showing all the damage by now.  Winter can be a bit anxiety inducing when zone pushing thats for sure!

I Live at the beaches.. Jax beach .. can anyone tell me if this is a coconut palm? It’s taller than an high plateau ( u see a few big ones around, but not this big). It’s in a back yard .. Probably 1000 feet from the beach.

Definitely a Coconut Palm, but must be a Jamaican Tall, or another one of the more cold hardy varieties to be alive and looking that good that far north in Florida!!!
