Dick Douglas garden/house on the market

I was reading Apple News this morning and saw this story (10/2) in the Miami Herald titled “Northern California home with world famous palm tree garden is for sale. Take a look”. I just knew from the title this Hardy Palm Garden was Dick Douglas’ and sure enough was. Thought others here would want to check out the article and video tour of the house and garden . Dick had invited us up to see his garden but weather etc delayed our accepting his invite and he passed away before we could schedule a trip there. We have however seen many photos from members here of his garden tours over the years. We were fortunate to have picked up one of them his named Chamaedorea hybrid at a palm yard tour auction years back so we’ve think of him  often still.

I thought there were photo albums of tours members took stored on here. Otherwise recall tour threads over time and threads Dick may have made. Hopefully not lost.

I didn’t have any problems accessing the MiamiHerald article btw and clicked off any subscription link. The MH article covers what the guy who bought the house did to it since holding it from when he bought it. Looking at the back of the house now I see the chamedorea’s I’m sure my little palm at the time came from was removed during the remodel. Wonder if sold to others or to that nursery in NC that had a limited quantity for sale.
The other link is a real estate listing. Same video. It does have a floor plan of the remodeled house if you’re interested. Not sure if the photos were taken off the video.

If you’re hoping for a detailed palm tree brochure, better off searching for threads/posts from Dick or members here for descriptions etc.

I can see some billionaire buying this house and probably fighting to out bid others. Owner did a beautiful job on the remodel but I know had to come at expense of some of Dick’s palms. Very unique property.

The old posts from Dick were inspirational to my early cold-hardy palm planting days although he rarely (if ever) posted photos.  Seeing photos that others took of his palms from personal visits years ago was amazing and I'm glad that the palm garden is still actively growing.  Hopefully it will continue!

I scrolled through the realtor images, and thankfully, Dick's mutant Chamaerops has been retained.  It is behind the blue outdoor sofa near the pool.  :greenthumb:

The Northern Calif Palm Society when we first got interested in palms had a website that had a lot of Dick’s palm species featured on it. Being a 9A/B area I remember scouring the photos and specifics of the palms to see what best met our needs as we planned out first home’s landscaping. At some point the site was changed up and I regretted the photos and details were lost I guess.

Yes, that is Dick's original plant.  I first saw it during a visit in the early 1980's.
