Another need palm in the collection mauritia flexuosa

Another little mail order palm this time a mauritia flexuosa. A palm that grows in swampy conditions. I have heard it tolerates the cold weather. I guess time will tell on that one in my climate. I did see a small seedling growing in the ground the other week a bit further north. Somehow I have a sneaky suspicion it will struggle in my area. Only one wa6 to find that’s when winter gets here.

Keep it warm for a few years till it gets a bit of size and you never know your luck. Seems to be a golden rule of zone pushing, as I've learnt the hard way!

South Arm, Tasmania, Australia - 42° South

Mild oceanic climate, with coastal exposure.

Summer: 12°C (53°F) average min, to 21°C (70°F) average daily max. Up to 40°C (104°F max) rarely.

Winter: 6°C (43°F) average min, to 13°C (55°F) average daily max. Down to 0°C (32°F) occasionally, some light frost.

We admire your tenacity Richard. It’s a numbers thing , the more you try (palms that are on the edge) , the more we learn. That one is another that I didn’t know existed. Good luck with it and if anyone can get it to grow it would be you. This time of year in your hemisphere gives it a fighting chance. Where I am at 34 degrees , or so , North , I am a bit limited coming up on winter. Harry

One of my favorites (check out my avatar photo)!  Juvenile first leaf is similar to Chrysalidocarpus leptocheilos and Euterpe edulis except on a long petiole.

For those of you that frequent Facebook, I’ve set up a group called “Pommy palms”, where many of the palms I’ve seen since emigrating to Australia have been documented. If you wish to be a member, copy and paste “Pommy palms” into Facebook to view the page and click “Join group”.

The jury is still out on this one in my area time and winter will be the judge.

That’s the one Harry setting new boundaries for the Palm community. Putting it out there. It has a bit of a chance now to acclimatise. Yes your winter sounds chilly to me.

It can be chilly but only occasionally dips below 40f . 34 degrees is my latitude. Still not warm enough to grow a lot of what you grow . Harry

Richard did you see mine last week ? Pic is my largest one, I have 2. Planted last Nov and went through winter down to 2.2C quite well. I expect grand specimens in a decade. My two were gifted as seed from the late and great Michael Pascall. I germinated them inside and planted them at the start of the wet season.

It’s unlikely winter but moisture you’ll be needing more of.  David Tanswell spoke of seeing locations where light frost is experienced near wild stands of M.flexuosa. In NQ they are something to behold, standing under them silhouetted by a deep blue sky above is amazing.  My top tank overflows on a daily basis into the head of a gully which flows to my Mauritia. They dry out for a day here and there only on occasions, otherwise are flooded. The other day the smallest one was underwater during our torrential rain.

Yes it was your one I saw last week. I pretty well much think water will be the main problem lack off in my climate I might have to make a mini clay dam and backfill with good soil. Your temperature is pretty well on par with my temperature only you get warmer days in winter. And any seed gifted to a person is always going to be special a plant and the rememberance of the person who gifted it to you whenever you see it. Alas one day I will get to far North Queensland.

It unfortunate that some of the most beautiful palms are not cold tolerant. Iam tropical look guy. But iam still not game enough to try a MAPU palm just no point i would kill it, that being said I do have 20 licuala Kalimantan seeds germinating I don’t know why though.
