I haven’t seen many other posters with Sabal minor palms, butias, or needle palms. Here are some of mine.

@NMPalmjunky

Any pointers on butia and needles? Do you do anything for our alkalinity?

Nice palms seldom seen here.

@jwitt I compost some of my own soil that I add to the top layer a few times a year. My compost is mostly food scraps, leaves, and other yard debris. The PH of my compost soil ranges from 5.5 to 7, which can be significantly more acidic than our native soil. I also started experimenting with a blueberry sulfur acidifier last year with decent results.

I should also mention that I started collecting rainwater in 50 gallon barrels under my gutters a few years ago. I did this initially to reduce my water bill, but I noticed that some of my palms really prefer this water.

This Washy has been at this place for years. It hasn't grown much over the years. I think in part is due to the fronds being cut off completely almost every year (it has to grow back its crown every year). It's really close to the wall too. Taylor Ranch area...

This is how our palms are looking here in late February. We had a low of 6°F this year. They will all be green again in no time!

@SailorBold  Yeah, they're fine! It is a shame though. They were so close to being evergreen this year. It was a dry event though with no precipitation. How is your BJxB doing?

Yeah it was relatively quick too.. I wouldn't call that part of a normal winter pattern.. bjxb fared the best out of all thus far.... jxb is looking a little crispy..! There is very little green on my filiferas..   I haven't done a full walk through yet.. but the argentine saguaro sailed right through..

Heck, it went from 4f to 40f the same day.

Yep, not our palm killing east wind Arctic event. Nope, a radiatonal freeze to mid single digits with recovery to 40f the same day.

@sailorbold

That aside, how about your armata(s)?  Hours from buying some. Tell me yours are good!

I had to go to a funeral that day and in the morning it was freezing you know what. At the cemetery around 10:00 it had already warmed up to 20°F with no wind. By the time the food reception was done around noon I remember on my way home seeing 36°F  on my dash. It did warm up quite nicely that day!

Good look on your Armata purchase!

But I bet you also had sunshine right? If the palms sit in sunlight they will probably warm up way above freezing.

Yes, clear skies which also means larger diurnal temperature swings. It was 35°F to 40°F (2°C to 4°C) across the metro the day before with clear skies throughout that evening. That's why we got down to 4°F to 6°F (-16°C to -15°C) and even a couple of 1°F (-17°C) readings. If it weren't for the Urban Heat Island we would've easily dropped well below 0°F.

In TorC they are all brown. In Cruces and El Paso they are a mix with some that are all brown (Robustas mostly) and some that are brown with some green in the middle.

No problem. Yeah that is a wide crown.

So the nursery I went to in El paso told me on the phone that they do have Filiferas but when I showed up they just had Robustas and Hybrids. I bought a Hybrid since I made the trip. I went back down to Cruces to another nursery but I showed up at 4:02 and they closed at 4:00. So I ended up getting the Filifera I planted at another nursery before heading back.
