What palms have you planted in 2024?

I ran out of room years ago 🤪.  That said, I decided to "add" a few palms to the garden.   With the older planting now way up above my head, the spacing issue becomes less problematic because the newbies will never catch the big guys.  That eliminates the problem of competing canopies.  Let the next guy worry about cutting all of this down when I'm dead.  Here are the 2024 additions:

Arenga tremula (1G)

Attalea cohune (I know it gets huge but it won't in my lifetime) (30 G)

Beccariophoenix alfredii (10 G)

Butia yatay (7 G)

Copernicia alba (3 G)

Hemithrinax ekmaniana (5 G)

Howea forsteriana (7 G)

Phoenix roebelinii (10 G)

Syagrus coronata (5 G)

Wallichia oblongifolia (10 G)

I planted out quite a bit this year but am just starting out too. This past weekend was three of the four Chambeyronias. They join a bunch already in the ground this spring, everything that took off growing roots essentially.  I can't wait to plant the little ones underneath the big ones some day but thats a decade off or more.  Room wont be a problem with an acre though unless i lose my mind lol.

So far I’ve planted

2 double Wodyetia bifurcata at the end of my driveway - they’re about 13ft tall and put out new fronds like crazy

5 dypsis lutescens in front of my windows for a privacy hedge - also growing like crazy, currently about 5-6ft tall

1 veitchia arecina - next to the driveway about 12ft tall

1 cocos nucifera -in the front lawn

everything else is still potted, mostly archantophoenixs, Copernicias, 2 beccariophoenixs, and some others

@SubTropicRay my yard is still fairly young, I only started planting palms about 6 years ago.  So a lot of mine are still way under 12' tall and competing with each other for space.  I only have a few spots that I could really consider "understory" for new small palms like Chuniophoenix, etc.  I'm up to approximately 300 palms in ground now.  This year I've put in:

  • Beccariophoenix Alfredii triple ~6' spacing between them
  • Cyphophoenix Alba, Nucele and Elegans in a widely spaced triple
  • Caryota Mitis "Variegated" from RPS seed, but not actually variegated...sigh...
  • Reinhardtia Latisecta
  • Licuala Peltata v. Sumawongii close spaced double
  • Chuniophoenix Nana
  • Chuniophoenix Hainanensis
  • Pinanga Philippinensis 2 clusters
  • Copernicia Baileyana x2
  • Copernicia Fallaensis
  • Copernicia Hospita blue x3
  • Copernicia Alba
  • Attalea Brejinhoensis
  • Kerriodoxa Elegans x2
  • Licuala Ramsayi
  • Elaeis Guineensis
  • Lytocaryum Hoehnei x2
  • Lytocaryum Weddelianum x2
  • Arenga Undulatifolia x2
  • Chamaedorea Oblongata
  • Chamaedorea Klotschiana x2

Some cycads hit the dirt too:

  • Encephalartos Paucidentatus
  • Zamia Inermis
  • Cycas Debaoensis (Multifrondis?) x3
  • Cycas Micholitzii x3
  • Cycas Guizhouensis
  • Cycas Litoralis 4 header
  • Cycas Thouarsii x3

I also planted a bunch of clumping bamboos:

  • Bambusa Textilis Gracilis - 5 spots
  • Bambusa Textilis Ladyfinger/Richard Waldron - 2 spots
  • Bambusa Textilis Albostriata - 2 spots
  • Bambusa Multiplex Rosa
  • Bambusa Glaucophylla variegated
  • Bambusa Doli Blue - 2 spots
  • Bambusa Doli Silverstripe - 2 spots
  • Bambusa Subtruncata
  • Bambusa Contracta
  • Bambusa Textilis RG Dwarf - 3 spots
  • Bambusa Eutuldoides Basistriata
  • Bambusa Textilis Purpurascens
  • Bambusa Textilis Vietnam
  • Bambusa Kenilworth

This year I was mostly getting my containers into the ground.   Yard is mostly planted out with anything that will grow to size at this point.  Yeah I wish I had more room, but with the heat here and the extra work of a bigger yard, good thing I dont.  My copnmtainers that went in this year are:

(3) copernicia hospita 10-15 gallon size

(1) copernicia fallaensis 15 gallon

(2) teddys  C. leptocheilos 10 gallon

(1) dictyosperma album furfuraceum 10 gallon

(2) chambeyronia macrocarpa hookeri 10 gallon

(1) chambeyronia houailou 7 gallon

@Merlyn Where does one find a Attalea brejinhoensis at? 🙂 I saw a couple of these at Leu Gardens very cool color patterns on the leaf bases!

I bought mine from Neil in Cocoa Beach.  I think I bought his last one at the CFPACS meet last April.  The attraction for me was the cold hardiness, which is supposed to be much better than Cohune and similar to Speciosa/Rostrata.  He said it was the only Attalea that looked great after winter, I'm hoping that's the case in my yard too!  I didn't realize they had the funky watermelon-ish bases until after I had already planted a couple.

If my cohune freezes one of these years that might be a good back up!

Well it has been a fairly busy year after a long time of no new additions other than planting seeds from my existing palms . New palms include ,

Syagrus Schizophylia

Wodyetia Bifurcata x 3

Kentiopsis Pyraformis

Archontophoenix Cunninghamiana x 2

Rhopalostylus Baueri v Cheesmania

Dypsis Lanceoltata

Dypsis Basilonga x 2

Dypsis Plumosa

These are what have “ hit the dirt “ so far this year . Like a lot of you I have an established collection and I have now filled in between that larger palms with these 1-3 gallon smaller palms. Anything , moving forward , will have to go down on the hill , that’s where there is more room.  Harry

Wow I think for the first time since we moved here in 2021 I haven't planted any palms in the ground this year, I'm out of space and also have many fruit trees.  After a quick tally I believe I have 27 palms in the ground here on my 1/4 acre lot. Species include:

Mule, Butia x Syagrus

Livistona decora

Bismarckia nobilis

Cocos nucifera

Chrysalidocarpus lutescens

Hyophorbe lagenicaulis

Wodyetia bifurcata

Sabal minor "Tamaulipas"

Roystonea regia

Chamaedorea radicalis

"Franken" Brahea armata x brandegeei

Syagrus romanzoffiana

 Archontophoenix "teracarpa"

Archontophoenix spp unsure

Ravenea rivularis

I think that's it in the ground, then I have a few others in pots waiting for a home.

I wish I was planting at a faster pace but it gets exhausting. My palm journey started rather recently in late 2022 with seeds at first. I've since bought a few small gallon size or three gallon sizes palms over time. Need to get more canopy for others I have growing in pots. This is what I have planted so far this year:

  • Roystonea Borinquena x4 (1 g)
  • Copernicia fallaensis x2 (1 g)
  • Archontophoenix myolensis x1 (5 g)
  • Archontophoenix cunninghamiana x1 (1 g)
  • Archontophoenix cunninghamiana x1 (3 g)
  • Archontophoenix purpurea x1 (1 g)
  • Hydriastele beguinii x1 (3 g)
  • Roystonea Regia x1 (1 g)
  • Chambeyronia oliviformis x1 (3 g)
  • Chrysalidocarpus lastelliana x1 (5 g)
  • Carpoxylon macrospermum x1 (1 g)

I have more to plant this year, but this year's plantings are nearing completion really. More for next, and even more when I finally get some shade going in my nearly black canvas back yard.
