Yellow Fungus on Elephant Ear Plant

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am new to the group and need some assistance diagnosing/treating my elephant ear plant.

This plant was dug up and given to me. I have not had a chance to repot as we've had constant rain for the past week and the temp has ranged from the upper 80's to mid 90's.  The plant receives indirect sunlight. This morning I saw this yellowish looking fungus(?) and have been in shock ever since!

Can anyone tell me what this is and how to treat? Any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated!

Ulanda, Welcome to the forum,

This looks like Fuligo septica, AKA: Dog Vomit Slime Mold,  a fairly benign fungus -like mold that often pops up after excess rainfall. There are some other sps of Fuligo, so i included a link to the Genus as well.

Other than looking kinda gross, won't hurt the Elephant Ear / other stuff in the same pot..  Even here in the desert,  rains enough and this stuff will pop up here in there in grassy areas / planting beds, esp those mulched w/ wood, or under trees with a thick layer of accumulated duff ( Duff = fallen leaves, twigs, etc other organic stuff that accumulates on the ground )

Have seen it pop up through gravel where there is a lot of organic stuff decomposing below the rock as well.

Once everything dries out, mould will disappear.

Can wash it off the stems of the plant w/ out issue.

Nothing that can be applied that will kill it since spores float in the air.
