Kentia Palm - one frond browning

Recommended Posts

Hi my name is Jon and I’m hoping for some help or advice with my potted Kentia Palm in Maine. I received this about two months ago. About 2-3 weeks ago I noticed some yellowing to browning on a single frond following repotting but there may have been the earlier stages prior to repotting and I was blinded by enthusiasm. It began progressing more dramatically at which point I took these pictures.IMG_7996.thumb.jpeg.ed0abd646589683c6a9612b38c6758ca.jpegIMG_7992.thumb.jpeg.6d21aa817de3d86b242910c4b13ad492.jpegIMG_7991.thumb.jpeg.c9e0f3d979f86a92bb0253760b8681bb.jpegIMG_7990.thumb.jpeg.bad4bacac8ded85e8bf16a48af1ac519.jpegIMG_7993.thumb.jpeg.43e83fd82145cc621306c13a8cd25f04.jpeg

I noticed the darker spotting but didn’t see any signs of pests and it’s only affecting this single part. Since then it has progressed still only affecting this area.

Today it looks fully dead and is migrating down the branch.IMG_8047.thumb.jpeg.5758216d9715057fc83c7899efeb7fb5.jpegIMG_8048.thumb.jpeg.c80fb2d7a3f147e275a450bb8111afa9.jpeg

The specifics-

I have this in a large half filled with inert objects (smaller nursery pots upside down with drainage holes drilled in. The soil is a mix of mostly coir and perlite (35% each) with some coarse sand (10%) and local potting mix (15% each). It drains well and quickly. I monitor the soil a scientific instrument like my finger to check the moisture level and end up watering about once a week thoroughly. I have been giving it a few days a week outdoors in a shady area on my front stairs (my wife thinks this is the cause).
POV: you are the Kentia PalmIMG_8049.thumb.jpeg.af597435c4fbd2f21c46478b374b5153.jpeg

I fertilized with some Epsoma when I repotted and put some earthworm castings on top.

I am wondering If I should remove this if it seems the branch is dying/whatever this is is migrating down from the leaves to branch. I would appreciate any advice or assistance and can answer any clarifying questions.

Thanks

Palms grow by reabsorbing nutrients from their oldest leaves then recycling the nutrients into more growth. Looks like one of your palms is doing just that as that browning leaf appears to be the oldest. Perfectly normal. Don't cut the leaf off until it is completely brown. Do not cut/prune green leaves as you will deprive the palm of those valuable nutrients. I suggest you do some research/reading so you understand palms better. They are not woody dicot trees like oak or sycamore but are more closely related to grasses and have their own needs and requirements.
