WaianaeCrider
Watching On Patrol Live on the TV and in a scene in Valutia Country the cops were saying something about people going around at night looking for the fruit. Is it rare or against the law to harvest? PalmatierMeg
It’s against the law to trespass on private land seeking to strip saw palmettos, i.e., Serenoa repens, of seeds to sell to pharmaceutical companies for processing into prostate supplements. Immigrants looking for extra money are the usual culprits. When I still worked at the mitigation bank on Little Pine Island we’d chase off van loads of them that pulled off the road to breach the fenced wildlife preserve. It becomes a real problem because palmettos stripped of their “berries” cannot reproduce, which threatens future generations of palms. Also pointless because, I believe, prostate supplements can be created in a lab/factory. 1 Meg Palms of Victory I shall wear Cape Coral (It's Just Paradise) Florida Zone 10A on the Isabelle Canal Elevation: 15 feetI'd like to be under the sea in an octopus' garden in the shade. OC2Texaspalmlvr
It's crazy that there is a black market for palm seeds. If there wasn't you wouldn't have these kinds of illegal activities. The fact that a certain palm seed can holistically be used to help with prostate problems seems like a good thing tho. T J T J
WaianaeCrider
Mahalo for all the answers. I can understand all EXCEPT what you do on your own land w/your own seeds. But I can't step onto your property to harvest your seeds or use your property as my personal shortcut (unless invited). The state of Florida now requires you to buy a permit to pick saw palmetto seeds, even from your own land. (since 2018) I think this is geared more towards commercial quantities being harvested and put up for sale, but just seems like another big money grab by the state. 🤷♂️ aztropic Mesa, Arizona Mesa, Arizona Temps between 29F and 115F each year
SeanK
I would guess that saw palmetto extract can be synthesized in a lab. As for fees, perhaps w/o a state income tax, Tallahassee has to look elsewhere to fund services.

The few Serenoa seeds my green palm produces never make it to harvest. I think the Muscovy ducks eat them. And I don’t think berry seekers know or care about permits. With all the building in the Cape vacant lots with wild Serenoa become scarcer every day.
