Where did they go ?

I couldn't help but think after frequenting a couple HGC's 🤔 where did all the multi potted Livistona chinensis go. By now you could go to just about any garden center and pick these up on the cheap. Even this spring I didn't see any available for full price haha I really wanted to throw a couple in deep shade and watch them stretch out.

I agree TJ.  Seems that they are not sourcing the same palms as they used to.  When I lived in Houston you could always find large Chamaerops, CIDP, Butia and L. chinensis for sale at HGC.  The past 7 years or so seems to have changed quite a bit - only smaller versions are available if any at all.  The last L. chinensis that I purchased was from Houston Plant and Garden World (in Spring) after not finding any at HGC and it was only a 5-gal size.  Looks like that location is no longer in business along the IH-45 N frontage road just south of FM1960.

@FuscaIt's funny you bring up CIDP , cause there in the same boat as Chinensis and I forgot about how readily available they use to be. HGC palms selection is so overpriced and blaw now , yet I still roll by just to see what could be available haha Robusta hybrids and Queens is all you get now =/

Earlier in the summer, I was talking to a local nurseryman and the topic of palm availability came up. Apparently Florida is where most of the palm stock is grown and the shipping restrictions due to lethal bronzing or other diseases has resulted in less palms being available. This could be the reason.

If you're ever put this way, I'll find you  a L. chinensis inside of 10 minutes.

That does make sense , especially for CIDP but shouldn't be for Chinensis right ?

I'm pretty sure if I was out your way Chinensis wouldn't be what I would bringing home = )

It's like the cold-hardy palms in blue pots that disappeared. 10-inch and 14-inch. Can't remember if it was Costa Farms or Acosta Farms.

Just checked where you live , I thought you were somewhere more tropical that's awesome that you have Chinensis out your way.

They're sold routinely in garden centers but are typically only available in a 3 gallon pot. Growing them outdoors is a challenge in all but the mildest micro-climates, and would need overhead protection to shelter them from our plentiful cold winter rains.

I used to throw all of the volunteer seedlings away...glad I kept a few seeing as they're a bit rare nowadays. Parents planted two around 99/2000 and one is still kicking...impressively hardy and tropical looking even in the cold west suburbs of Htown!

I have been there a few times,  not exactly convenient then again neither is Maas. That's not a bad price honestly for either.

For anyone looking in the Austin area “The Great Outdoors” Nursery has a few. Occasionally Tillery Street Plant Company and Barton Springs nursery will have them as well.

The conversation was about palms in general, but it could be just the date palms and Sabal palmetto

There might be 1 or two Archontophoenix cunninghamiana left and dozens of European fan palms along with tons of oversized queen palms lol maybe that’s boring to some Houston people from the recent drama
