Robbertico18
Just received 2 super mule Palms from moultrie palms and I’m excited for them to take off! Was wondering if anyone had some larger examples they could share pictures of. Also, I recently tried to email Patric for a list of his available palms about a week or so ago and haven’t heard back yet. I know hes not a full time business I just want to make sure he’s still around and that I have the most up to date contact info. This is the email I have for him coolhybrids@yahoo.com thanks y’all! 3

RJ
I’ve got a couple of these, I had a big one 25g size that my kids left the sprinkler on for a few hours. It didn’t like overhead city water, shortly after spear pulled and went toes up. My smaller ones are doing just fine.

One of the Palm Talkers posted cross streets for the only known home on my Island that has Mules growing in the front yard. It is a new house and there are 6 fairly large Mules and they all have the custom “diamond cut” trunk I believe it is called. They look very nice. I will try to snap some pics next time I head out and post them up here. Edited July 23 by Dwarf Fan
JLM
I got a standard and a super mule from them last year. The standard was planted out, super stayed potted until this spring. The standard spear pulled in March and is recovering well after having to cut it back a bit. I will have to get pictures today of both of them. Btw, my super came with a blue zip tie around the base of the palm, the palm has grown enough now that it literally popped it off. 1 Palms - 4 S. romanzoffiana, 2 W. bifurcata, 4 W. robusta, 2 R. rivularis, 1 B. odorata, 1 B. nobilis, 2 S. palmetto, 1 A. merillii, 3 P. sylvestris, 1 BxJ, 1 BxJxBxS, 2 BxS, 2 L. chinensis, 1 C. nucifera, 1 P. roebelenii, 1 H. lagenicaulis, 1 H. verschaffeltii, 1 T. fortunei, 1 C. humilis, 1 C. cataractarum, 1 S. repens
Dwarf Fan
For OP, the street view in 2015 shows nothing but an empty lot, the house was built in 2017. I would venture to guess the Mules were bought by the builder already somewhat grown and trimmed and put in ground as part of the landscaping around that same time. Robbertico18 here are pics of the only known Mules on North Padre Island.

I will definitely do the “diamond cut” on the trunks as well I love that look.

Ive heard of it but never seen it I don’t know if the trees I posted have that specific technique on the cut, they look similar but upon closer inspection they look more like the boots were just cut straight across but in a nice uniform manner. The “diamond cut” technique seems to have a bit of an upward angle to the cut. Edited July 23 by Dwarf Fan 1

Thxs Pat Super mules as they are called are the name for the creation performed by Frank Lewis of Moultrie Palms and another hybridizer. The female tree is a F2/F3 Jubutia created by the late Dr. Wilcox, which is then pollinated with Syagrus romanzoffiana. To my knowledge they should be hardy to the mid teens. This thread here the poster saw temp of 12F and his super mules were defoliated....and a later update said one "looked" alive, but no further updates. I know there are others that have performed a (Butia x jubaea) X Syagrus cross, not sure if they call them super mules or not...

Also all of these Butia hybrids are gonna be a crap shoot on the eventual look of these palms. Some look like the best of both parents some end up the worst of both. It suxs cause you won't know till they get much larger. Also with Mules becoming so popular and profitable they spend so much of there life in pots that they end up looking really skinny to me. The survivor had a major case of spear rot and it was not clear it was going to live until early summer. Neither one was trunking size yet.
