Nomad NYC
In the beginning of my recent Hawaiian vacation, I managed to stumble upon a little park called the Queen Kapi'olani Garden in Honolulu while walking from my hotel at Waikiki to hike up at Diamondhead national park: The Garden seems to be botanical in nature, but examples of the labeling of the plants are far and few ( so I will be guessing their identity, unless they are specifically labled ). I'm not a big Pritchardia expert, so not sure what kind of Pritchardia palm species this is below. I think it looks like Pritchardia Kaalae.... Or maybe a Koolau Range Pritchardia ( Pritchardia Martii )? I believe that the Pritchardia on the left is Pritchardia Schattaueri ( one of the Loulu's ). You can see a potion of Diamondhead in the background. Ponytail Palm ( Beaucarnea Recurvata ) and unidentified Pritchardia Palm. Not sure what kind of Pritchardia Palms these are as well... In regards to the Garden, the story goes that King David Kalaukaua owned the lands of Queen Kapiolani regional Park and the adjacent garden, but donated the lands for public use in the late 1800's. He then named the garden in honor after his wife, Queen Kapiolani. The Queen Kapiolani Garden is located at Kapiolani Regional Park, between Montsarrat, Paki and Leahi avenues in Waikiki, Oahu , and is free to the public and is open 24/7.
Nomad NYC
Here are some more pictures taken at the Queen Kapi'olani Garden in Honolulu, Hawaii: While not the best looking, for a free urban public botanical garden in Hawaii, It was still pretty nice. On the left - an unidentified Pritchardia palm , and on the right - Pritchardia Schattaueri ( Loulu ). Here is one 'Bismarckia Nobilis' looking Pritchardia palm. Anyone knows exactly what species this one is? Ponytail Palm ( Beaucamera Recurvata ) As stated in my previous post, I'm not sure what the identity of the palms in the following two pictures, it could be Pricardia Kaalae... ....Or Pritchardia Martii ( Koolau Range Pritchardia ). Another group of Pritchardia Palms ( that I also could not identify ). Unfortunately, the Queen Kapi'olani garden seems to be neglected ( there was some trash around ), and I don't remember seeing any of the Hibiscus and Roses that the Garden is known for. With all the expensive houses surrounding the area, one would think that there would be a nice local community group that would help volunteer to help manage this public garden. Anyway, despite the current state of the garden ( and I just wish that they would be more consistent with their plant labeling ), it is a nice place to stop and visit while you're in the area, especially if you are into Palms, which they have quite a good collection in my opinion.... ....And it's also a pretty nice rest stop on your way to Diamondhead!
