Trachy establish time frame?

I planted my windmill palm march 2022 it grew 2 leaves during that spring summer, fast forward this year its opened up 2 leaves and is in the process of opening up its 3rd leaf with 2 spears behind it, is this now classed as established? If not how long it take to establish. 16864020913587800547275908807513.thumb.jpg.777d3f88da441e516d6df5701878f647.jpg

Years back I was told the 3-year plan; sleep-creep-leap.

The first year its roots need to get established in the ground.

So this time next year the growth rate will be even faster? That would be it's 3rd year in ground

I consider Trachy here fully established (Fully hardy) when they have a full size trunk and grow at the rate of 10+ fronds/year.  I agree with the 3 year time

For the first time in 40 years I'm failing with Trachycarpus fortunei.  Even a somewhat beat up survivor, started to send new spears only to have them dry up and now not look so good. Windmills have never given me a minutes grief until we moved into this new place 4 years ago. I can not explain why these palms continue to fail while others in town, even down the street manage quite fine. Even my immediate neighbor has the same problemo.

Take a soil sample.

All other plantings seem to do well. Trachys struggle well within their temperature limitations.

Are they smaller ones?

I don't even understand this, especially given that these palms had previously performed well for you.

Mine has been in the ground for a year now and has opened 3 or 4 fronds since the start of the season so its definitely speeding up plus I gave it fertilizer back in march or something

Two part answer. I grew Windmills at previous locations for decades. We've been at our newest location for 4 years now and the plantings I put in here have struggled and 2 have died and another looks close to that. It pulled thru the winter a bit rough, started pushing new spears and the they dried up as though water starved. I'm waiting to see if it gets a second wind.

It will probably speed up even more, as at the moment it's still probably focusing on growing out it's roots if it's only been in the ground for a year.  I would keep it well watered if you are under high pressure. Here I water mine 2-5 times a week depending on the temperature outside. I agree with what SeanK said in regards to the 3 year plan. Some fertilizer should also help speed it up.

I so this is it's second year planted about and is pushing out more fronds than last year, I put the hosepipe on it for 15 minutes 3 days ago and flooded it deeply, it's 24c out atm I'm not sure when to next water it next to be honest

So I'll repeat. Take a soil sample.

At Least test the pH at home. If you have 30 years of success followed by 4 years of failure, there is something going on. You have the experience and knowledge to grow in the PNW. There must be some hidden issue.

Cold damage in the crown.  Small palms especially susceptible

When the top of the soil starts to feel dry, but don't let it completely dry out. You could probably water it today or tomorrow as long as the soil isn't wet at the moment, damp is fine. At the moment I'm watering mine everyday for the past 2 days and I will probably give it another water today, however I have fast draining soil and it's 32c at the moment.
