Lanonia dasyantha

realarch

There was a question in a previous post about wether the mottling on this particular specie of Lanonia would be retained as the plant matured. I can give a definite ‘yes’ to that question, at least with the particular variant I have. They show this trait even as a small seedling.

Mine doesn’t compare to Realarch, but here are a couple of pictures of mine growing in coastal central Florida under a live oak. It has even started to flower.

Mine is finally taking off after last year's transplant shock. Hope it gets big one day like the pics above... near Houston, TX zone 9

What mediates the degree of variegation? Light, temperature, water, nutrients, etc. or just genetics? Realarch's are mapu-level stunning.

Luke, I think it has to do with genetics as I’ve also acquired other plants that had no mottling and planted under the same conditions. There is a reputable local grower who specifically offers the more unique Lanonia dasyantha.

Thanks for the comments all!

Wow! The ones you’re growing there could easily be the understudy to a Mapu! I had no idea variations like that existed for this palm.  Very nice Tim.

Tim yours is the prettiest one I have seen. I have four grown together so pretty much the same conditions and quite a difference in leaf color. 9FE24B07-AC23-4167-A58C-A22192A4CE57.thumb.jpeg.b6b9e187735180fc383edb0a1fef2f81.jpeg

They are on a steep slope so difficult to photograph individually.

One has light green leaves with little mottling.

My best might be this one.

None of mine rival my mapus.

Here are a few photos of mine. I can't get far enough away to capture the whole plants.  Overplanting syndrome.
