Lol! No problem here's the waggy but I'll have to get back to you Friday with a picture of the Radicalis. I don't have a recent one.

@Billeb, here's the Chamaedorea radicalis. Crappy day, wind blowing hard so not the best lighting.

@ZPalms, I'd definitely try some minors if you don't have those type. I believe your 8a right? Mexicana might be a good choice but it'll definitely have to be protected a few winters. Everyone of mine have struggled in ground first winter. I finally got a seedling to survive 1 winter ( very minimal protection) after 2 failures. Hopefully 3rd times a charm. Waggy will be another good choice. Do you see any filibusta around your area? Might be a good zone pusher.

I do have some sabal minor seeds that I have to sprout and I would get a waggy if I had the money and I have a few filibustas but I would get one if I had the money as well 😂

Im not sure how I feel about having to protect another sabal along with the Sabal Causiarum if I decided to try sabal mexicana this year.

decisions decisions 🤔

I bought one of James’ Livistona rigida x decora hybrids. This is one neat palm. The bluish metallic color reminds me of my Chamaedorea metallicas while the saw teeth on the leaves are like those of a Copernicia. If you like Livistonas you should consider one of these.

I have bought some of his Livistona Rigida x Decora in the past.  I agree with @PalmatierMegif you love livistonas you should buy one of James'. He is a master in packing them so that they arrive safe.  You can't go wrong with buying from James.  Here is a picture of one of the palms

I heartily agree, the palms that I've gotten from James were very well grown and he does a great job of packing.  I got a couple of Brahea edulis from him and I'm very happy with them.  :)

So far so good - they don't seem to mind.  Brahea armata is supposed to dislike high humidity also but here's a nice one growing in San Benito.   Notice how it is mound planted at least 6" higher than the ground level (probably clay underneath).  I have one in a container that I grew from seed that doesn't look very blue from being in too much shade but it's chugging along.  I have a dulcis seedling that looks even bluer under the same conditions that should be big enough go in the ground next year.  I'm hoping the edulis will be ready to plant out at the same time.  :)

My livistona decora survived 22 degrees during Palmageddon without any damage whatsoever.  I would say that this hybrid is as cold hardy.  I don't know how cold it gets where you live though.

It gets cold and wet but the average in my winter at night is 27F to 32F but more or less so I'm sure If I did decide I would need to cover it

@ZPalms, both are really hardy Livistona's. I'm sure once established it can take 8b temperatures but not look so great.

Here's the Acoelorrhaphe wrightii in a tall 1 gallon pot.

There's a clump in a Brownsville parking lot that I'm always excited to see as I pass. I see them around some but that one has a space all of its own so it stands out to me.  Online I find it listed as USDA 10a and, while I'm near that, the ones around here have definitely survived at least 1 cold blast in the low 20s. With a clustering palm in zone 8, I suspect that when a trunk gets too tall to protect you can still cover the smaller trunks so you don't lose your investment of time. I don't know if its ever been tried up your way, but seems like an interesting project. Keep us updated!

I'm not sure where online you read this mis-information but Acoelorrhaphe wrightii is more likely an 8b zone palm.  The "Freeze Damage Data" forum here on PT is a better source for cold hardiness. There is a good sized clump at Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio that survived 9°F in Feb. 2021  See recovery photos on page two of the following thread which is referred to as "Palm #10" in the original list:

There's also Acoelorrhaphe wrightii that recovered from the same freeze event at the San Antonio Botanical Garden.  I think @ZPalms can expect defoliation from time to time but if he can get it through a couple of winters it should do OK.

That's great! I wish they were a lot more common because I think they have massive potential for the home landscape. A small footprint in the yard (trimmed) with trunks leaning outward seems like a great use of limited space.

Yes, I agree PalmTalk is a wonderful resource but perhaps I haven't learned the trick to searching it.  Has there been any effort to keep that data in a spreadsheet or database? I spend a lot of time browsing this forum and I make software for a living so I think I could give back by building a set of new features.

@5amyes, Kinzyjr has made a great spreadsheet.  It's compiled of a couple of databases and almost the entire "Freeze Damage Data" forum.  There's almost 5000 reports in there:

Thanks for reposting this - Jeremy @kinzyjr did a great job with this!  I was going to reference this spreadsheet but didn't remember that it was in the same forum.  I need to download it again - I had it on my work computer but couldn't retrieve it when I got laid off.  :(
