Hi guys,

Is it a good idea to get an Old Man Palm & Date Palm in 6a?

Palms:  Sabal minor, W. Robusta, Windmill, Pindo, Needle, European Fan, Majesty, Cat palm, Sago palm, Saw Palmetto, Chinese fan palm, Pygmy Date palm

Buddy, I got the same climate as you, and planting in the ground those palms will not work out, in a pot though it probably will.

I’m not sure Coccothrinax crinita will make a good houseplant indoors where you are or even where I live. It wants high heat (85-90+F) and all day sun. If you can provide for those needs during your cold, dark winter - perhaps, but don’t bet the rent. This is a 9b palm at best. Even outdoors I haven’t been able to provide the conditions it needs to survive long term. Mine always developed fungal problems, went into decline and ultimately carked. I had better luck with C crinita brevicrinus. Bear in mind both are rare and expensive.

Palms of Victory I shall wear

Cape Coral (It's Just Paradise)
Florida
Zone 10A on the Isabelle Canal
Elevation: 15 feet

I'd like to be under the sea in an octopus' garden in the shade.

I recommend you start with more common palms and limit the number. Let them grow a year, then expand the palette.

i stole cocothrinax seeds at the resort from a variety of palms in mexico, either way the resort was jungle styled so the guys working there really didn't care. They don't even have grass in some areas, just palm tree seedlings that keep getting cut back by lawn mower, lol. Anyways back to what i was saying the cocothrinax seeds i got, i know a couple of them were from an old man palm i think.
