On the second day of Spring it poured rain and blew hard.  Trees came down this morning and tree trimmers contracted by the utilities were out trying to prevent damage to their lines.  The CIDP's down the street are now making a fashion statement after the crew finished with them.  An hour before this it was pouring rain and power in West Leucadia was out from some other damage.

And if your train was late, blame it on this Eucalyptus tree that fell on the tracks two blocks south of me.  I heard a train a few minutes ago so they must have just finished the cleanup.

It really feels like Spring!

Another one bites the dust! Wow! I think that's the third one down on the 101 in the last couple weeks. One went down not too long ago just north of Encinitas Surfboards landing on the train tracks. It's trunk still lays there next to the tracks,  and another Eucalyptus that used to cover a big Date palm about half a block or so north of Especial Norte is no longer there either. That big Phoenix that was once reaching out for sun now stands out and looks pretty awesome.

I didn't see either of those two previous ones that were down but my wife told saw both and mentioned them to me.  Pretty soon we will have to rename my street since there won't be any left.  What a change driving this section of the Coast Highway from what I remember decades ago, when it was all completely lined with big Eucalyptus.  Hopefully some of the Torrey Pines that have been planted will establish deeper roots and be more stable in the long run.

Coral Cove across the street to the south of me has lost two of their Torrey Pines, one last night and the other went down in one of the storms a couple of weeks ago.  That was preventable, due to another issue:  Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance when Torrey Pine Planting.  They planted a couple along the slope edge of storm-water catchment basins in soft sandy soil.  Saturate sandy soil, add more rain and high wind = Poor Performance (as in failure).  I digress from Spring because other than temps warming and days getting longer it doesn't look like a typical Spring in Encinitas.  At least I was able to wear shorts in the rain this morning while walking the dogs.  More rain here and snow in the mountains tonight followed by another system possibly dipping down to drench us Monday or Tuesday.

I drive through Orpheus street on my way to Encinitas 101 quite frequently. Wondering how the street and houses are faring with the flooding - there is always a giant lake between Hygeia and Puebla on Orpheus. Feel bad for the homeowners who have to call the city every time to pump the water out of their yards. The engineers just never thought through the drainage on that street.

Another topic.. where might I find these lovely gizmos? They always pair so nicely with palms.

I can provide cuttings as I have plenty.  These started as seedlings from one that flowered just inside the fence a few years ago.  I have a ton of new seedlings I pull up and throw away.

Yes, I have friends that live just south of that lake on Orpheus.  The City is pretty good about getting their trucks out.  They currently have lay-flat 4" hose that is just left along the west side of the street going south so they can pump the water from the lake to the south which then drains by gravity west and south.  It seems like a good spot to sink a well for that neighborhood since they get good groundwater replenishment... it would certainly save on summer water bills.

Perhaps they'll end up renaming it "New Caledonia court" or "Malagasy lane." B) The Eucalyptus are definitely a staple of Leucadia history so it's unfortunate to see so many go down. I remember how it looked as a kid and especially in old photos it almost looked like the Koloa tree tunnel on Kaua'i. One a more positive note, your Ambositrae in the front looks amazing.
