Not really. Wood does not ward off the cold produced in a zone 6 winter.

Wow, pretty impressive. I can't imagine that the steps on a west facing side would make much of a difference. Could just be a tough seedling. Palms are very much like humans, some can tolerate colder weather than others, even if they are the exact same species.
