Musa sikkimensis for zone 7

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I've been growing Musa Basjoo for a few years with minimal mulching in zone 7. They always come back but they pretty much only reach 6 feet by the end of the season.

I recently found and bought 2 Sikkimensis and I was wondering if anyone has experience with them in zone 7 or colder and if there's any chance they could be treated more or less like Basjoo.

All I can say is they are not as cold hardy as basjoo.  Around here in zone 8b/9a they get killed to the ground just about every year, where basjoo usually keep their pseudostems.  I would expect for you to need to provide more protection.

No type of banana would stay green over the winter here. Even the Basjoos regrow from the ground. However I'm interested in the corm's hardiness. I'd like some variety, so I'm looking for a different Musa that has similar corm hardiness to Basjoo.
