I know that Zamia pseudoparasitica won't grow outside here in San Diego, even in the best of climates.  The only one I am aware of in San Diego County is one that is growing inside the relatively new Conservatory at San Diego Botanic Garden (formerly Quail Botanic Garden here in Encinitas) which is temperature controlled year round.  I don't know if it is our absolute lows or just the winter cool period when we fail to warm up during the daytime that is the issue.  Perhaps someone else will have additional feedback for you.
