If there was ever a fully hardy unique palm for Texas it's that, and it's so beautiful in person. Your yard looks amazing btw thanks and I totally agree, these pure blue uresana palms are gorgeous. I bought three of these palms from an elderly, elderly man in Tucson about 15 yrs ago, who had garnered the seeds himself.... the palms were one gal size at that time. Sadly my sabal hasn't seeded yet.... I'm hoping it'll set in the next couple years and plan to cut off any flowering stocks from all my other sabals, to minimize cross pollination. p.s. I check yearly with JF gardens to see if they have SU seedlings but they don't seem to be propagating seeds from their trees !!!! 2 Jv in San Antonio Texas / Zone 8/extremes past 29 yrs: 117F (47.2C) / 8F (-13.3C)

Meangreen94z
I went into to Pearland to take care of a few things at my mothers garden. My parents live in a townhouse in a retirement community. Claimed Butia x Jubaea hybrid. Also Yucca linearifolia and Agave marmorata. One of two Copernicia alba I planted. A small Livistona nitida in the far left corner.Majesty(Ravenea rivularis), Livistona decepiens, Phoenix sylvestris, a Queen(Syagrus romanzoffiana ) in the back by the banana. A sunburned Encephalartos ferox below the majesty. The majesty trunk is really thickening up.Queen courtesy of Matt-N-DallasBeaucarnea recurvata splitting into multiple trunks, 6 foot fence for reference. Some burn left over from last December. The bigger of the two Bismarckia coming back. This one only had Christmas lights wrapped around the base last December when temperatures dropped to 16-18°F in the area. The other amongst overgrown flowers. They have several other palms that made it through including small Hyphaene petersiana, Medemia argun, Chamaerops v. argentea , and Chamaedora radicalis that received cover but no heat. Here is the Majesty and bigger Bismarckia last July (in the far back)

Xenon
I've seen one surviving queen on the south side of the Hampton Inn in Lake Jackson. Haven't seen any survivors in Freeport/Surfside, that area is historically colder than Galveston and even bay front areas like Kemah and Clear Lake. Possibly new plantings? There's just not much water to moderate the north/northwest wind in that area. 1 Jonathan Katy, TX (Zone 9a)

Xenon
24 minutes ago, Cade said: Too cold for royals ? The (X) is where the property is less than 200’ away from the bay It's about the same as League City, often colder than central Houston. The water is not positioned in a way that heavily moderates the lows, what water that does exist is extremely shallow (loses heat quickly). The Gulf only helps on windless nights. Galveston Island has the entirety of Galveston Bay due north. The system of bays around the causeway to the island's northwest is also much larger in area with much greater depth. Galveston is A LOT warmer than Freeport on 95% of winter nights. Would not really bet on a royal in Freeport imo, you might get a decade if the stars align. 2 1 Jonathan Katy, TX (Zone 9a)

There's a Holiday Inn express around 288 near the Lake Jackson/Clute/Freeport area: the Hampton hotel across from it has a survivor easily visible (others are not accessible via map): https://www.google.com/maps/@29.0102191,-95.4117648,3a,25.6y,354.22h,89.02t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sJM2IFpJMxUkug5P4gYGbpQ!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu

Luckily, most of the coldest temperatures of the season in your area occur on relatively calm nights following a frontal passage which allows for the Gulf blanket influence. Plus you have a much better setup with Corpus Christi Bay directly to the north. I keep track of lows on your area and the low for the 2019-2020 winter was quite high at 41F iirc. Here's an example of a typical freeze event in Houston following the passage of a cold front, you can see both the Bay/Gulf influence and the urban heat island influence (in conjunction as well) Edited August 5 by Xenon 1 2 Jonathan Katy, TX (Zone 9a)

As you know, I am not really head over heals about Zone Pushing, but the Thrinax Radiata that I got for $25 bucks as a “rehab project” is really taking off (just pushed out two new fronds on my watch) and if I have to protect and baby ONE Palm well this is the one because I have always wanted a Florida Thatch Palm and this one clearly likes the spot I gave it.
