Sabal miamiensis x Sabal mexicana hybrid Seeds

Last September not long before Hurricane Ian hit, I cut down the whole crop of seeds from my amazing Sabal I grew from a desiccated seed I found when I visited Leu Botanical Garden in Orlando in June 2015. This Sabal has been the fastest growing and maturing large Sabal I have. It produces the largest seeds of any Sabal I have ever seen, 2x the size of my original S. miamiensis seeds. It also flowers and sets seeds weeks or months before any other Sabal and seeds ripen in Aug/Sep rather than Oct/Nov. I have posted about this palm in the topics below:

Consensus on the forum is that the Leu Garden plaqued Sabal miamiensis might have hybridized with a nearby Sabal mexicana. DNA testing to definitively prove this theory has not been done. But I have not doubt this palm is different and special. And because it sets and ripens seeds long before any other Sabal I know the seeds I harvested reflect the mother's genetics. If you have any interest in the Sabal genus you need to try this palm. It is totally cold hardy here and I suspect it is cold hardy as mexicana or palmetto in other parts of the US.

Photos are of my Leu Garden mother palm (taken today - no lasting damage from Ian); it started flowering in mid-Feb; the colander of seeds I saved in 2022; and a photo of ripe fruit with my index finger for reference. This palm deserves to be disseminated more widely.

I purchased some of these last year on Ebay from you.  They have grown very fast for a sabal. I also purchased sabal miamiensis and Savanah dwarf previously maybe 2 years ago. The dwarf is indeed the slowest sabal I've grown from seedbso far. The miamiensis is quite hardy. Probably as hardy as say a tamaulipas which is imo almost as hardy as a regular minor. But time will tell, and proper sitting in the landscape for winter drainage could be a factor in cooler climates, idk. Do you still have this hybrid available for sale?

Yes, I do. I found the miamiensis x mexicana hybrid to be astonishingly fast growing. The mother palm in the listing was a desiccated seed in June 2015. It is almost as large as my pure miamiensis, which came to me in a cone in 2008.

Meg,

There is also a Sabal maritima very close by that may be a pollen donor. That specimen was very vigorous and fast growing and is massive. A seedling I grew off the Sabal miamiensis and planted in the Arid Garden seemed like a "normal" S. miamiensis for awhile but the last couple years it has developed a fat booted trunk and is getting large. It sure looks like it has S. maritima in it though the seed came off of S. miamiensis. I have planted other seedlings around from this S. miamiensis parent but no others have started developing into a larger palm. Yet.

Thanks for that info, Eric. The plot thickens: Is my mother palm's sire a mexicana or a maritima? Only DNA testing will tell. Either way, it is a robust and amazingly fast growing Sabal considering it was a desiccated seed in June 2015.

Same here and I too have noticed the fast growth.

Very interesting.
