PaPalmTree
one of my favorite palm trees is needle palm but the needle palm isn't that sturdy to snow but sable minor a sturdy to snow and ice the windmill palm is sturdy to snow and ice I've even heard reports of a growing up against the house in Zone 6B with protection c9 Christmas lights and protected when needed

SeanK
Needle palms are more finicky to wet soil in winter. Sabal minor works in sun-shade-wet-dry.
Quasarecho
I've got Sabal Minor in pots indoors during winters. Needle Palm planted out for nearly 2 years zone 6A with minimal protection on South side of the house. Even pushing out new spears here in Feb. My vote may change to S. Minor once I plant out the McCurtain seedlings I've got going.
GregVirginia7
My McCurtain here in zone 7, Northern Virginia, has been indestructible…very slow growing but carefree, protection free…wants a fair amount of water and would do better in more sun but very adaptable. 1

ChicagoPalma
Here in Chicago the winters tend to be 6a/5b, and the windmill palm I planted last summer is doing well and recovering after being fried by the c9 lights even during the cold. So, considering what is the coldest zone a palm tree is in here in the us, that could be mine. 10 hours ago, PaPalmTree said: one of my favorite palm trees is needle palm but the needle palm isn't that sturdy to snow but sable minor a sturdy to snow and ice the windmill palm is sturdy to snow and ice I've even heard reports of a growing up against the house in Zone 6B with protection c9 Christmas lights and protected when needed

ChicagoPalma
I've heard of them, but their selection of cold hardy palms is rather small, staying only around the sabal, needle, and windmill.
ChicagoPalma
They have similar zone up north in Ohio, so they have temps just like Chicago.

The coldest temp this winter we had was -14 with windchills in the -40s. I put the green frost blanket along with a comforter ontop that and other than one palm defoliating its spears are all still good. We’ve had 61 degrees and 50 days here and there since. No spear pull.

ChicagoPalma
I can do an experiment for next winter, I will plant needle palm and sabal minor palm seeds around my neighborhood and by my house to see how they grow and how they will do during the winters. I’m not really worried about them being invasive as I might put them near or at microclimates and the seedlings they may have when they flower and get seeds might not survive the winter, and either way they don’t get too big. There are too many things that can befall a tiny palm seedling, so you should not risk losing it by rushing it into the ground. 1 Meg Palms of Victory I shall wear Cape Coral (It's Just Paradise) Florida Zone 10A on the Isabelle Canal Elevation: 15 feetI'd like to be under the sea in an octopus' garden in the shade. PalmatierMeg
1 hour ago, PaPalmTree said: I have always heard people say plant them young A 3g needle palm is hardly geriatric. Fair warning: needle palm seedlings are very slow growing and long PA winters do them no favor if you keep them outdoors. If you are too impatient to wait up to several years for that, at least grow it potted until the leaves go palmate and the palm has a strong root system. Also, keep it and all palms in deep pots, esp. trunkless palms, which grow underground stems. When and if you do plant your needle figure on never moving it again. That also applies to Sabals with less than 4-6’ clear trunk. Digging them up will fatally damage the growing point.
