Five Palms: Chrysalidocarpus, Coccothrinax x Zombia, Serenoa green & silver, Chamaerops silver

Last week I planted a dwarf Chrysalidocarpus lutescens. This week I trimmed four other palms that had gotten out of hand while we dealt with the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.

1. Chrysalidocarpus lutescens 'Vietnam Dwarf'

I've had this little clumper for years but it finally outgrew my largest pot, which had the nasty habit of tipping over in high wind. I decided it had to go in the ground in what's left of my jungle. This cultivar reaches only 4-5' tall. To my knowledge it neither flowers nor seeds so must be reproduced by division. I'm not good at that, as several dead dwarf lutescens can attest. Now it's free to cluster to its heart's content.

2. Coccothrinax (barbadensis?) x Zombia antillarum

I trimmed this slow growing hybrid to expose its spiny main trunks.

3. Serenoa repens green

Some people let their saw palmettos grow into gigantic porcupines of leaves but I really like the look of their serpentine trunks so I trim off excess leaves and offsets to show their architectural beauty

4. Serenoa repens silver

5. Chamaerops humilis cerifera

This little guy has struggled with fungal infections because of too much shade
